I think that the song means that she was sad, depressed (sinking) but a new love in her life suddenly saves her, makes her remember how to swim... I love this song!!!

To me it means she was so in love with someone she felt so good, like she was floating or swimming. Then they did something and it broke her heart so she 'sunk'. When she starts to swim again shes gotten over them.
