Back & Forth Lyrics

This sounds like a description of a longstanding hateful relationship between Dave Grohl and a journalist, which has ended up in a legal battle.

i think that this song is about dave's relationship with the band and how maybe they haven't spoken up in the past about qualms that they have had, which have been many.. "now show a little backbone why don't you,i'm looking for some back and forth with you.." it's also in my opinion reminding them that despite his name that he is empathetic and just as depressed as the next guy.."i'm taking them back, all of my i.o.u.'s... you've got a lot of nerve.."

i think the song is about dave being in a relationship and for some reason he finally notices that he is always getting in fights with this girl on purpose, almost like he is looking for them. so he tries to clear his head and has to make a decision on whether to leave or stay with this girl.
