Foo Fighters: Everlong Meaning
Song Released: 1997
Everlong Lyrics
I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight
I throw myself into
And out of the red, out of her head she sang
Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me
Slow how
You wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head she...

#1 top rated interpretation:I actually read in an interview that it was about his girlfriend at the time who he loved so much and everlong is in fact a love song
its about loving someone so much that when you sing with them everything is perfect
"when I sing along with you
if everything could ever feel this real forever
if anything could ever be this good again
the only thing I'll ever ask of you
you gotta promise not to stop when I say
she sang"
a lot of interviews on the foo archive site where dave says what his songs meant when he wrote them but generally its for the listeners to interpret for their own situations -

#2 top rated interpretation:Maybe he's recalling a time when he and his girl were singing together and it was the perfect moment. Out of the red (her heart)and out of her head she sang. She sang from her heart and mind and he didn't want her to stop singing no matter what... it's not about sex, it's about being in crazy in love... singing a slow song together.
Some people may not understand this but, if you have ever sung a romantic song with your main squeeze, it's intoxicating. Remember, Dave's a musician -that's his love language...
He's just reliving a beautiful moment with someone he loves/loved... -

#3 top rated interpretation:this song is about being in love with a person and the relationship is perfect, but he starts too wonder how long it can stay this way. So at the end of the chorus he asks her not to stop when he says when. The answer to that part is that he is asking her not to stop loving him when he says the relationship is done. then in the second verse he says breath out so I can breath you in, hold you in. He asking her just to give him all of her life so they can be together without any walls in between them.

The interpretacion I received from this song is of a blooming relationship that is not mature yet, like in the line “I've waited here for you” he talks about how he's waited “everlong” for this person which means forever. But it's an adolescent relationship that is “perfect” to him , but he is afraid of it not lasting long or him losing it. Which is why in one of the lines he says “And I wonder When I sing along with you, If everything could ever feel this real forever, If anything could ever be this good again” he is referring to his lover that when they have the good times he thinks of the downside of it ending and if he’ll ever find “love” like that again.

Its About being with someone at the peak of your relationship, and thought all good things come to an end. It makes you wonder if this, or that moment can last forever. It makes you wonder if you will ever feel this good again, and the only thing you want in return is for them to give you a chance, and to keep trying to make the relationship work. The song evokes real love, that feeling of shyness, yet excitement, like the first time for anything. It's a feeling that is so strong that you want it to last forever, even though you know nothing ever lasts forever. in the video, Grohl is trying to protect his girlfriend. When he sees that she is in trouble his hand grows abnormally large and beats down anyone that tries to hurt her.

Well. This is coming from a 13 year old Foo Fighters fan :D This is my favorite Foo song <3 At the concert I went to, this was the first song they played. Great first show ever, right? X3 Anyway, I can relate to this song in some ways. To me, the song screams 'Passion' and 'Longing'. The SOUL in this song is AMAZING!! I know this wasn't the most helpful thing ever, but hey! It's not everyday you find someone my age who LOVES this type of music, band, ECT.! Thanks for reading! ROCK ON FOO FANS :D

I know that Dave wrote the song for his girlfriend. Personally I always thought of it of beeing about Drugs. I like both interpretations alot because it's kind of similar beeing in love with some body so much that it actually becomes alot like an drug addiction and you can interpret alot of love songs as drug songs.

I love the whole song, the only thing that puzzles me is when he says:
And I wonder, when I sing along with you, if everything could ever feel this real forever. If anything could ever be this good again. The only thing I'll ever ask of you
you gotta promise not to stop when I say "when she sang"
Who is he talking about and who is "she." It sounds to me like he's talking in present tense but "she" is a memory?
Any ideas guys? -
it's about oral sex, i think.

I see this song as being about a toxic but compulsive relationship... two people who are in love, certainly, but the love is tainted somehow - whether by obsession/drugs/mental instability etc. The two people in the song seem to really love each other, but the relationship just destroys them. The beginning of the song seems to indicate that he is directing his message to a "new" lover, and trying to explain to her how it was in the previous relationship...

i've liked this song since i first heard it way back in the day. to me it was always a song i listened to when i was sad. it reminded me of her.. her became the wife.. then became the x-wife... someone i am still in love with and having a hard time getting over.. if your heart is broken you listen.. and it has the meaning of how you feel or felt... it is a guy in love with a girl... either reminessing or thinking how he felt back when he was with her... idk.. just know that acoustically... it makes you just think... "if anything could be this good again" is a part i can relate to the most... will it ever? idk..

I think the song is about a NEW girl he is falling on love with (hence the word AGAIN in "if everything could feel this real again and the two references YOU and SHE or HER) and reassuring her and telling her she (the new girl) shouldn't stop singing with him when he says "when she (old girl) sang"

This song took me a while to understand but I finnaly got it right. Its definately about having a relationship and making love with a girl...
Hello, I've waited here for you everlong (Means, he was waiting for the girl to come in his bed)
Tonight I throw myself into, out of the red, out of her head she sang (Everytime he says, she sang or anything relating to singing, its because they make sound because they love it (orgasm)
I'll let you get the rest, it's pretty easy after this
The chorus is awsome
And I wonder, when I sing along with you (When i'm having an orgasm with you at the same) the rest is easy
Happy listening ! -
