Stars Lyrics

This growing old is getting old
I often find myself here thinking
About the birds, the boats, and past loves
that flew away or started sinking
And it's crazy here without you
I used to think this all was ours
We stay up late debate
On how...

You can interpret a lot of things from this song. I think that he obviously misses his mom. I also believe that Him and a girl as teens had big dreams. well now as an adult he fulfilled his dreams becoming a big artist. Being a singer he gets money , fame, and groupies. but he sometimes think about that one special girl who meant a lot to him and realize he left her behind. I also read that if you look at stars you are looking at the PAST so "you're holding on to stars" could me she holds on the past. :)

I think it is interesting how the starts with lyrics well articulated and as the song progresses he falls apart first with electronic assisted voice then he miss articulates words at the end. which is a metaphor of his life. He started chippy then lost his Mom and then some other girl and he is now a confused old sad man

I think it means that he had a girl friend as a teen and he got his dream of being famous and she didn't like it so that's probably what Nate was trying to say in:"I feel like I had it all
Back before I lost it all
Now I just wait for you to talk to me
But you won't even look at me, baby"

It describes their experience stepping into fame and becoming celebrities. People started treating them differently, "
I feel like I had it all
Back before I lost it all
Now I just wait for you to talk to me
But you won't even look at me, baby"
This song is also about teenager's obsession with celebrities and famous people. By idolizing them, they expect them to save their life etc when they are really just normal people, not superheroes.
"And I've been saying that you
    You're always holding onto stars
I think they're better from afar
Cause no one is going to save us"
It says that when we don't find people in our real lives to help us, we put it into the hands of ideas of people. "You say it's, 'all up in the stars.'"
Nate is trying to say that he is not a hero. He is a regular person still but people are treating him like a god.

i think he misses a girl he use to have an intimate relationship with,i also think she told him he is always holding onto stars (dreaming big) and since he has reached his dreams she sort of felt sorry for herself and told him that she is fading into the dark...

i believe that he tried to forget about her and other things he misses (including his mom) and he is trying occupy his mind "some night i rule the world, with bar lights and petty girls"...

maybe being famous isn't everything to him anymore, and he misses the way things use to be before "i feel like i had it all, back before i lost it all...."

I think he misses his mom, obviously, but I think he also misses some other girl, like a relationship that has grown apart, and he has given up on making it right again, yet he still misses her.

The lyrics, "It never came true, it came true, it never came true."
Well, this part confuses me. It's like he changes his mind a lot..... :)

This song is nostalgic for the writer. He is thinking about the past, how he misses certain things. He blatantly states that he misses his mom, but I think this song is referring to the person(s)(a girl) he has grown apart from because they have different ambitions/priorities. He says "you're always hanging onto stars...well I'm fading in the dark". You've got to be able to make your own way and be ok with it, since no one person is going to save you. The lyrics possibly even hint to not count on any person for the things you need, since they're not always going to be able to give it to you. I think these are all implied in some way or another by the lyrics.

He misses his mom. He feels like heʻs just this lost person with no guidance..but the only thing he can do keep moving forward and trying to achieve something because thats what his mom used to tell him. "holding on to stars."
