We are Young Lyrics
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom
Getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she's waiting for me
Just across the bar
My seats been taken by some sunglasses
Asking 'bout a scar...

#1 top rated interpretation:It's quite simple. Let's break it down.
This song is talking about a young, immature, and reckless young man who is obviously in an unhealthy relationship with a girl. He clearly has issues with substance abuse, and she most likely does too (maybe just not as bad as him). This has nothing to do with a break up. In the song he says, "My lover is "waiting" for me just across the bar". He doesn't say "my ex happened to be across the bar" or "this girl I used to date is across the bar". He says "my lover" is "waiting" for me just across the bar". Then he further states, "MY" seat's been "taken" by some sunglasses asking about a scar. This means it was his seat and that he was supposed to be sitting there, and somoene took his seat in his absence. Now where do we imagine he was coming from? He was more than likely coming from the bathroom where his friends were "getting higher than the empire state". Now he has to explain this to his girlfriend that they're all in there getting high he probably snorted a little bit of coke or smoked a little bit of weed while he was in there). He’s probably promised her that he's not going to engage in those behaviors any more. I interpret it that he has hurt his girlfriend either physically or emotionally while he was under the influence and he had told her he wouldn't do it again; and like most abusers and addicts their behaviors are often repetitive. They use drugs, they become aggressive, and then apologize. A vicious cycle. Just because he mentioned that the gave her the scar months ago doesn't necessarily mean that was the only or last time he was abusive towards her. That incident may have left a permanent mark on her while others didn't. Now the "sunglasses asking about a scar" is probably a random guy who just happened to sit in his seat when he got up. The guy saw the scar and probably asked her about it. The song continues, "You know I gave it to you months ago. I know you’re trying to forget”. Now he's probably thinking "darn, I just got high, which is bad enough, but now this guy is bringing up that freakin scar". So now he approaches her in a gentle way, but his mentality clearly hasn't changed. He sings, “But between the drinks, and subtle things, and the holes in my apologies, I’m trying hard to take it back”. What he’s saying is, “Look, I’m sorry, I know I drink sometimes, and stuff, and my apologies don’t really make any sense, believe me I really am trying to take it back”. When someone has “holes” in their apologies it means that even though they’re apologizing, they’re really not taking responsibility for their actions
Then the chorus comes, Tonight we are young. Like a typical addict he’s making excuses for why he’s going to engage in his irresponsible behaviors gain. He’s like, “Look babe, we’re young let’s just have a good time to night. In fact we’re gonna dazzle tonight”. He wants her to engage in this behavior with him.
In the next verse he says, “Well I know that I’m not all that you got”. What he’s saying is that I know that dealing with me you got more than you bargained for. Then he says, “I just thought we could find new ways to fall apart” He’s saying I was willing to try something different”. But ah, now the excuses come, “But our friends are back, so let’s raise the tab”…….. “Because I found someone to carry me home tonight”. Now I’ve read several misquotes to this. I’ve heard “so let’s raise the cup”. I’ve also heard, “So let’s raise the toast”. No, it’s “Let’s raise the tab”. Now I know there maybe some young’uns reading this and may not be familiar with a tab. But a tab is when you give a credit card to a bartender and allow them to charge a certain limit on drinks. So a person may go out with a group and give the bartender his credit card and say, “My tab is $50”. The bartender knows not to exceed that amount. Or a person may have an open tab (no limit given) which allows the bartender to charge as many drinks as they want to drink.
I interpret this part of the song as, he and his girl were obviously at the bar which means they probably planned on having one or maybe two drinks, therefore keeping the night good clean fun. But now he’s using his friends returning as an excuse to drink more than that. An alcoholic will always find an excuse. And he’s even put out there that he’s found someone to carry him home.
Now clearly she buys into this plan of drinking. And, in turn, she asks him to carry her home because knows she's gonna get trashed. After all it’s Janelle in the song that is repeating, “Carry me home tonight”. He agrees to do so at the end of the song but that’s probably just to pacify her so that she can engage in the behaviors with him. Clearly he’s not going to because a little bit earlier in the song He pointed out that he found someone to carry Him home. -

#2 top rated interpretation:to me it sounds like the guy hurts girl (i don't know if physical or emotional...) he's apologized over and over but he knows he was wrong (hence holes in his apology).
she's drinking away her sorrows at the bar while some random guy comes to 'comfort' her but the singer doesn't want to lose her. so he's pleading with her: do what you have to do. if you want to get drunk tonight to forget the pain, that's okay. i'll take care of you. (i'll carry you home tonight)
"we could find new ways to fall apart" - i think this means they have always had troubles in the relationship but he still doesn't want to end it because he thinks being with her is worth the risk of having future troubles.
"tonight we are young..." - let's just have fun and drink tonight. we can worry about things tomorrow. she tells him "carry me home..." so basically she agrees.
some people (including me) think instead of "world" it should be "the moon is on my side" - in that case he's saying as long as the moon is out, this night i spend with you will last. cuz tomorrow they have to go back to reality.
"the angels never arrived" - she hasn't given him the ok that he's forgiven...
"i can hear the choir" - he feels soon she will.
and he just goes on to repeat that he's watching out for her. should she drink herself silly, he'll be there to carry her home.
somehow in my mind, even though he also asks if someone will carry him home, i think it's both literal and metaphorical. 1) he wants to get wasted too and needs a driver
2) he's asking her to forget the past and move forward with him. -

#3 top rated interpretation:This song is about a couple that is in a rough spot in their relationship. They are working through it, and are trying to keep up appearances around their friends. And while they are currently working on fixing the relationship they still hurt each other a little, but ultimately realize they will always be there for each other.

Like all music, it’s not about one thing. but the theme is addiction- going with cocaine for sure here. Or meth but for the sake of the music it’s coke. It’s why he has to get his story straight, his mind is racing. It is about an ex, but an on and off again type and that is the other “sub theme” if you will: Addiction to an ex… to the familiar, to what is comfortable, to the one that got away, whatever. The third theme I see is addiction to a feeling. A feeling of hope, of living forever, of being invincible and on top of the world. These people are not that young anymore, but when he’s back home or they are all able to get together, they’re addicted to the past. Obsessed with reliving the nostalgia of their youth. It is all what might have been and recreating the environment that they remember when he loved her, she loved him, they were happy, and they were all a big group of young high, happy people who didn’t care about bills. It’s escaping but it’s for a night. they have to be carried home because they’re excessive in their habits and because they’re broken. And broke because they keep extending their time at the bar past what they can afford- “raising the tab.” Let’s not leave the past, this bar, each other.
Oh, his seats been taken by some sunglasses is much less literal even. Yes the man next to his lover/former lover is wearing sunglasses. But it’s her date I think. It’s not a physical scar, the date is asking about him, the narrator. He scarred her when he left her, she is trying to move on. He needs someone to carry him home because he’s going home alone and she is not. -

"Give me a second,I, I need to get my story straight."
He's about to tell the story, he just has to remember the details.
"My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State."
His friends are stoning in the bathroom.
"My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar. My seats been taken by some sunglasses askin' 'bout a scar."
His girlfriend sitting at the bar and some guy comes up asks her about a scar on her face.
"I know I gave it to you months ago, I know you're trying to forget."
She doesn't wanna talk about it because she was in a fight with her boyfriend. The guy singing the song gave it to her.
"But between the drinks and subtle things, the holes in my apologies,"
Between drunken behavior, common behavior -
I think that this basicly reflects the fact that he has made a mistake by hurting her and leaving her scared but he doesn't know wot he's done hence the 'holes' in his apollogys and because they're young they can learn from their mistakes and move on. Xx

We Are Young In A Nutshell:
YOLO!!! -
The guy abuses the girlfriend ("asking bout a scar, and i know i gave it to you months ago") and he sees her talking to another guy and gets jealous so he starts drinking."the holes i my apologies could mean he was drunk so he doesnt remember really doing it (beating her).Notice the name he uses for the other guy that shes talking to "some sunglasses". I think its kinda like she is his property and he maybe leaves those scars as his mark..."now i know that im not all that you got" -she was talking to another dude,so hes butthurt."maybe we could find new ways to fall apart" we make mistakes but learn from it/grow from it..."but our friends are back" he completely forgets about his girlfriend when he sees his friends and then says "i found someone to carry me home" dude, i thought you were going to carry your girlfriend, what happened to her?Stupid drunk..then later in the song he says "so will someone come and carry me home" i think his "friends" arent really his friends if they now are gone somewhere and arent taking him home anymore..:the angels never arrived but i can hear the choir" means he was in a stage of being drunk and was hearing things that sounded like angels but they never came.."we are young so lets set the world on fire" i think its saying since theyre young they can get away with things such as "setting the world on fire" and "getting higher than the empire state" btw which was in a bar, thats public!dumbasses are gonna get caught..he eventually remembers her and says :ill carry you home tonight:...i think it kinda has a theme of coming of age

I think it is a group of friends as well as ATLEAST two in the group are or were a couple. He has done things to hurt her. Either physically or emotionally and he sees his "lover" across the bar and his seat was taken by someone asking about the scar's. this may be that she is emotionally broken and not ready to move forward because she still loves him. He is trying to show his maturity by not going to the restroom and getting high with his friends on whatever they are using. Which could have been the problem in the relationship. He may be trying to prove to her that he really means he is sorry and he did not participate with his friends in the restroom. (ATLEAST for tonight). I think these are older people that are friends and as the verses say that "Tonight" we are young. They feel for one night that they are young again. So lets set the world on fire-- like let's just let go & party! Tomorrow their lives may be as they usually are and all go back to their normal lives, but tonight lets set the world on fire , we can burn brighter than the sun. So, when the bar closes he is saying he will carry his love interest home or they can help each other home. He is saying that he still has feelings for her and wants to either carry her home or he may need her or his friends to carry him home once he is drunk and the bar closes down but he is hoping that she will come with h and they can fall apart together. It sounds like all of "his friends" are getting high except for him. And he may be intentionally or unintentionally wanting her to see that. Once the friends get back, they raise the " cup" which means they can work out the serious problems later, but for now let's just have fun . Because "Tonight we are young, so lets set the world on fire, we can burn brighter than the sun". This may also refer to all of them, or just him & her that he is referring to. I would love to know the true meaning to this song, but it may be just that. Everyone needs to get their own meaning from it. We are all ages, races, heterosexual or homosexual, broken ourselves or have hurt another to the point of broken ness and need healing in one way or another. I think the group is in their 40's and NEED to feel YOUNG AGAIN, but they know that tomorrow everything will go back to normal and return to their "OLD" lives.

I think the dude gaver her the herps and now she has a scar on her lips and hes sorry about burning her.

Two friends fall for one another in a rocky love affair and end it only to realize that they were much more than they thought they would be.
"Give me a second, I need to get my story straight"
He is obviously taken aback, not expecting to be alone with her, but it is a welcomed surprise.
"My lover is waiting for me just across the bar...my seats been taken by someone asking bout a scar."
He is there with someone else who is getting hit on. He notices but he is where he wants to be, so he does not hesitate or move from where he is at.
I gave it to you months ago...you're trying to forget...you know I am trying to take it back.
He broke it off, she tries to move on. But here they are neither moving, both talking unable to deny the attraction and feelings they still have for one another.
Now I know that I am not all that you got, maybe we could find new ways to fall apart...
She has attempted to move on as well, and he is aware. But, he propositions her to accompany him in their previous disfunction of falling together which led to their falling apart.
Our friends are back (shhh be cool)
They're mutual friends are back...but the chorus explains the rest.
They didn't come together, but they will leave together and they can rely on each other to carry one another home because what they have is enough to set the world on fire and their attraction burns brigher than the sun....but no need to be so serious....because they are still young. -
One line at a time:
Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
He's going to tell a story, but he was a little drunk at the time so he needs to collect his thoughts.
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
They're getting high. He's not.
My lover she’s waiting for me just across the bar
My seat’s been taken by some sunglasses asking 'bout a scar, and
The seat may or may not be literal. If it is figurative, then they broke up and there's a new guy trying to pick her up. If its literal, then they are still together. Either way, a guy notices she has a scar.
I know I gave it to you months ago
He gave her the scar.
I know you’re trying to forget
She hates that he gave her the scar and she just wants to put it behind her.
But between the drinks
She drinks to put it behind her.
And subtle things
There are small things that remind her of it. You know, like maybe when she takes a shower or when the two are talking and the topic slips out.
The holes in my apologies, you know
He tries to apologize, but it's too serious to be covered by a simple apology.
I’m trying hard to take it back
He truly is sorry and wants to make it up to her.
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home
He knows she's getting drunk and knows that later in the evening she'll have trouble being stable, and he wants to be there for her when that happens. Also, remember the line "May friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State"? Well, he's not high, which helps explain that he will be able to help her.
Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
(2x)
He's basically saying just to leave it all behind them and have fun. He's saying that they are still young and that they need to enjoy it.
Now I know that I’m not
All that you got
He admits he's not perfect, not the best choice.
I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
He wants to make amends.
But our friends are back
So let’s raise a toast
‘Cause I found someone to carry me home
Same message as the chorus.
The moon is on my side (Nananananana)
It's still night, they still have time.
I have no reason to run (Nananananana)
He's feeling better now.
So will someone come and carry me home tonight (Nananananana)
He's drunk?
The angels never arrived (Nananananana)
She hasn't forgiven him yet
But I can hear the choir (Nananananana)
But she probably will soon.
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home tonight
This last part basically sums it all up. He wants to be there for her and make it up to her. -
its about a guy who does two things. The first thing is good. The second thing is not. He gets a girl pregnant and then get drunk at a bar.
-
guy beats up girl and they break up. He has apologized but he knows there's something lacking in his apology, like he doesn't mean it 100%. "My seat's been taken by some sunglasses, asking 'bout a scar" there is a guy from the bar talking to the girl asking about her scars that he gave her, but really he should be the one sitting with her. he knows that she could do better, but he cares about her too much to let her go. Even though they have had a bade relationship, as long as he is in a bad relationship with her, he doesn't mind.
