   Someone was close to the real story behind the song: "I actually think this is about a girl who is homeless and is trying to make it as a famous actress." It was modeling, and she didn't start out homeless. She was becoming successful and got caught up in drugs. She eventually ended up living on friends couches and in the end she overdosed and died young. It is not about Lana, but someone she knew. Her real name was changed to Carmen for the purpose of the song and her annonymity.

    The title refers to the French myth of Carmen!Prosper Merimee wrote in 1845 a short-story about a Bohemian who uses her charms to achieve her aims. This story was put on again on an opera. Then the story became an opera. Today it's one of the most performed operas in the world!! I think Lana knew it because there are few words in French

    The song is about a 17 year old prostitute. There are clear references in the lyrics to "buy her tonight" and "street walking at night.". The double life is killing her emotionally.

    This song is about her in her teenage years. At first I thought the lyrics and tune put together was quite freaky, but when I reread the lyrics I understood it.
    It is about her when she was seventeen. As it says it in the lyrics. . The message she's trying to get across is that even though she has messed up ALOT she still shines bright and has earned other people's respect for an obvious example her fans.
