Linkin Park: Forgotten Meaning
Forgotten Lyrics
Bottom to top I stop
At the core I’ve forgotten
In the middle of my thoughts
Taken far from my safety
The picture is there
The memory won’t escape me
But why should I care
There’s a place so dark you can’t see...

#1 top rated interpretation:Its original form was Rhinestones off the Zero Sampler tape, before Linkin Park was called Linkin Park. When it appeared on Hybrid Theory, some of the meanings were removed, and were later re-added and elaborated on in Reanimation. They talk about how the system and the government have neglected the poor in society. It also refers to a struggle with some unknown enemy, but largely focuses on the struggle within your own mind, finding some sort of momentary mental peace and understanding about your problems, that then crumbles away, leaving you back where you started. It accurately describes the trauma based mental loops I've seen in many of my friends and experienced myself.

#2 top rated interpretation:I don't think it's not really about drug addiction or anything like that.
'Then with the eyes tightly shut looking thought the rust and rot and dust
A spot of light floods the floor
And pours over the rusted world of pretend
The eyes ease open and it’s dark again'
Maybe this verse talking about how someone did something wrong in their life or something bad happened to them like a death of a loved one or depression etc. Then they try to look for a solution. But in the end, the so-called solution ends up screwing up his/her life even more. -
What I think is battling with drug addiction and trying to come back from it, but the drugs changed him and leaves him depressed, because the emotions after drugs will never be the same (when the paper is crumbled up it can't be perfect again.) I know how it feels I have used drugs in the past and the reason why drugs feel good is because it basically uses the your hormones that make you happy, motivated and many more things too list (you can google neurotransmitters because these are basically the so called hormones) but these hormones (real term is neurotransmitters) can get damaged. After the drugs the vicious circle begins. *Whenever he starts feeling a little bit better the darkness comes back (meaning he gets depressed again).Take in mind that the darkness/ depression usually feels much more intense, while the light/that little bit of happiness might be really small. Maybe he uses more drugs too, too feel something again. And the circle starts over again at the: *

I think it’s about a past relationship Chester had and he dreams about it when he see his ex’s face in the dream he cry’s about it because he knows he will never see her again he can’t get her out of his dreams or he thinks the dreams real but then wakes up which makes him sad and frustrated the darkness holds him tightly until the sun rises up In the memory you’ll find me eyes burning up the darkness holding me tightly until the sun rises up.These are good lyrics that hit me hard when I first heard them I was going thru a lot at the time so I just tied it together with the song this is my favorite Linkin park song it’s sad and beautiful at the same time.

Its about mushroom trip amd how it affects your reality... When the papers crumbled up it it cant be perfect again. When you have had a life changing mushroom trip your view on reality will never be the same. The TV refers to mad made object being bad. I have had this exact experience and I relate 100% to the song its crazy.

Someone is teying to break free from there drug habit and has met someone who could probably help him go forward in a better direction this person is insecure but has hope for their own future but needs reassuring that they can change their life by just one positive acceptance of what is abailable like a woman to love who loves them back with no conditions! The person is reaching out for a solution to seek change for the better!

Remember something you completely forgot about and it haunts you~

I think that he was going to kill him self and when he was caught he felt like crap and started doing drugs. He was caught doing drugs and he felt even worse. Now he doesn't know what to do with his life.

"In the memory You'll find me, eyes Burning up The Darkness Holding me tightly Until the sun rises up"
It wants to tell that, the girlfriend, when she sees her boyfriend in her memory, her eyes fills with tears, cause their love had broken up previously, but she again wants to love him, but it was impossible to do so.She feels that the darkness was holding her tightly, which it could only leave her when her depression ends up and her boyfriend again continue to like her. -
It's about a struggle within his own mind. He is lost in a memory of something.
"the eyes ease open and it's dark again" and "taken far from my safety" and "until the sun rises up" suggests that he is trapped in this memory. The memory is "the place so dark you can not see the end" that small light is hope
Basically this song has a lot of meaning to it -
Maybe the song mean different for everyone but I think it just the memory or the action that you will never forget and you just wish you could forget it I mean everyone had that moment before.
-
This is just what I think, but i feel like it could just being a bad memory or thought that never, ever goes away. He/she takes up a maybe not so great habit or way of thinking and people who may know and are trying to stop it, but it's their fault it's happening in this first place.

Umm...Linkin park usually says they leave it to the fans because they spend a lot of time on the lyrics and so they don't talk about lyric meanings too much and there could be more than one meaning,so maybe the meaning YOU come up with,is the meaning of the song for YOU.
And I know you might not agree, but I relate it to substance or drug abuse.I used to abuse substances and i still want to,but not street drugs.just dxm ( in cough medicine)
And inhalents ( pretty much anything with toxic fumes or anything that comes in a spray can.)
This is just how I relate to it,alot of you will think my lyric analysis is compleatly false, but this is just how i relate to it.
From top to bottom, bottom to top I stop.
( I usually roam around the house on dxm, from top to bottom.I walk around pretty much everywere,it's real weird too,you see things if you take too much.)
At the core and forgotten,in the middle of my thoughts.
( I usually end up in the middle of the livingroom pondering everything I usually worry about, and end up confusing myself and forgeting the opinion I was trying to use to explain my thoughts and express my view of it.)
The picture is there
the memory won't escape me
( I think maybe this part could be about someone who uses drugs or substances to escape a painful memory,I usually use substances to escape stress or anxiety,so I can't really relate to the same reason but this is just my theory.)
But why should I care
(Maybe the painful memory hurts them but the drug or substance leaves them apithetic and they may feel as if it will always be there or that something is hopeless,so they just say they don't even care.)
There's a place so dark you can't see the end
( maybe the person thinks things are just hopeless and dark, and fear it might not end,or at least they don't see it in the future.)
I could tell you my interpretation of the whole song, but it's the middle of the night,If you want me to post the rest, email me,sakurasucks@aol.com -
I think this song is about someone, who is trying to forget something that happened or they did in the past. They subjected them self to hypnosis(the power of suggestion)which induces the memory.(with the eyes shut) this is the phase where the person remembers their tribulation.(then the eyes ease open) the person comes out of it but realizes that the memory is still there.

I beleive the song is about a dream he had about someone that he had never seen in a long time. The world he describes is almost like a fantasy, unreal, like everything's dark and deserted. he calls this a "world of pretend," meaning a dream, "then the eyes eased open and it's dark again" meaning he woke up from the dream and is now lying in darkness; "the darkness holding me tightly," until morning, or "until the sun, rises up"...
when he talks about his "memory" and how it was like the paper; "crumpled up and never perfect again", he means that his dreams are always exagerated making the memory seem more horrific in his mind.
P.S. i'm a songwriter and my songs are very similar to Mike Shinoda's writing style and use of metaphors, so I have a good feeling that I may be pretty close to the true meaning...

If you'd ever done LSD, you would know that's where the song's origins come from.
This whole verse describes some of the thoughts and feelings had on an acid trip:
There's a place so dark you can't see the end [LSD can make the place your in seem exaggerated ie. extremely light or dark. It also gives an endless tunnel effect to some places ie. hallways and streets seem to extend on forever.]
Skies cock back and shock that which can't defend [he feels helpless and defenseless]
The rain then sends dripping acidic questions [the acid causes him to question himself]
Forcefully, the power of suggestion [he wonders why he is there, in that room]
Then with the eyes shut looking thought the rust and rotten dust [the eyes are shut because he is trying to look for hope, but he stills knows he is surrounded by bad things]
A spot of light floods the floor [the spot of light is a glimmer of hope, to what he wants to see]
And pours over the rusted world of pretend [the light, or glimmer of hope, gets bigger, and he starts to believe that hope will prevail]
The eyes ease open and its dark again [he believes it so well, he wants to open his eyes to see the hope, but is brought back to reality]
Sorry I don't have the time to finish, but the rest of the song is similar in meaning. -
Maybe it doesn't have one meaning, maybe your meant to interpret the song in your experiences. Some relate it to depression others to drugs, who says it has one exact meaning? Why not each to their own?
