Linkin Park: Shadow of the Day Meaning
Song Released: 2007
Shadow of the Day Lyrics
I close both blinds and turn away.
Sometimes solutions aren’t so simple.
Sometimes goodbye’s the only way.
And the sun will set for you,
The sun will set for you.
And the shadow of the day,
Will...

I also think it is about a soldier going away to war, because war is a theme in the whole album. The flowers on the window part could also mean he's putting flowers as a memorial.
-
The first time I heard this song the immediate thought I had was that it was about someone about to commit suicide because they had a problem that they felt was unsolvable (ie sometimes solutions aren't so simple, sometimes goodbye's the only way). But I think it is probably not that specific. Like it could be applied to leaving behind anything where you feel you can't go on for various reasons.
But if you watch the music video it opens up a whole new set of interpretations. -
When I first heard the song, it sounded like he was singing about suicide. Then I watched the video, and I think he is referring to the futility of war and the casualties of war (injured and dead).
-
The part about the flowers on the window makes me think the song is about someone who is sick, perhaps in the hospital, maybe sick with depression, or maybe a physical illness. I think the song is just saying that sometimes it's too hard to continue to fight, and sometimes death is the only solution.
-
I always thought of this song as a going away song, whether it be to college or to war or anything else. The person feels torn because he wants to stay with the one he loves but he wants to leave. That why, I think they say "The sun will set for you, the sun will set for you and the shadow of the day will embrace the world in gray and the sun will set for you." I think this is his way of saying I will always be there for the one he loves. I don't know, I could be entirely wrong.
-
I found that it has a differant meaning for every person that listens to it... I believ its a song about suicide...
-
I always see this song as if a guy is visiting his girlfriend in the hospital for she might die.
"Sometimes solutions aren't so simple,
Sometimes 'goodbye's the only way"
could be talking about how the doctors don't think they can save his girlfriend.
