Megadeth: 13 Meaning
Song Released: 2011
13 Lyrics
To draw my thoughts, I'll gather and tell
Like bricks that I've laid to build my life
Those that crumbled only caused me strife
Thoughts became words, cast into the sea
But they returned, always haunting...

#1 top rated interpretation:This song is, obviously, about Dave Mustaine and how the number "13" is lucky for him. It is about his childhood, how he began playing the guitar at thirteen years old. It is his thirteenth album, track 13 on the album etc. It mentions the bad things that happened in his life, but the chorus is more optimistic: "And I'm still alive". It is almost as if he is thinking of stopping writing songs, though he hasn't made a statement that he is thinking about it, "I just don't think I can give any more". "Years of clawing at scars that never healed" refers mainly to Metallica, I think, that he was so angry at not been in Metallica and in their bigger success, that he never actually celebrated his own success.

I see it as basically Dave’s life story and the history of Megadeth put into song. “At 13 I started down this path fueled with anger, music was my wrath. Years of clawing at scars that never healed drowning my mind the thoughts are too real.” Refers to him starting to play at 13 and it being an outlet for his aggression. Along with the fact that he was out for revenge after mowing kicked from Metallica and spent years dwelling on that fact. And the opening of the song up to the first chorus is Dave speaking about the number of albums released. Then the chorus I believe is referring to the number of times he went to rehab and struggled with his addictions. “Because I've lived, how many times do I have to die? Because I've lived, how many lives do I have to die?” I think this is referring to his nearly fatal overdose and he number of second chances he’s gotten. “Thirteen times and it's been lucky for me After everything, you still want me to bleed
Thirteen ways to see the devil in my eyes
Because I stood here thirteen times and I'm still alive.” I feel this part is about the Megadeth career again with regards to all the lineup changes. This being the thirteenth album he’s saying that he’s been here thirteen times and is still going despite all the troubles, trials, and failures through his career. -
