Motion City Soundtrack: Together We'll Ring In The New Year Meaning
Together We'll Ring In The New Year Lyrics
Welcome to the new year
The drinks were consumed
The plants were destroyed and the hor'deurves dismantled
I'm not smiling behind this fake veneer
I am often interrupted or completely ignored
But most of all i'm bored
I'm...

I think it's about that he was invited to a New Year's Eve party by an old girlfriend who broke up with him and she announced her engagement to someone at that time. He's angry and upset and he wishes he could leave but can't.
He's trying to pretend he's happy for her ("I'm not smiling
behind this fake veneer.") but is also trying to convince her it's the wrong idea, but she won't hear of it. ("I'm trying to find out if my words have any meaning...why won't she listen to me?")
He wishes he had beaten the other guy to the punch ("there's a ring around her finger./Last chance for changing lanes,
and you missed it by a mile.") and now is regretting it. He just feels upset and angry and doesn't want to be there. So that's how he's going into the new year. -
I think this song is based on low self-esteem. I think it's about a wallflower, who everyone basically ignores or walks on (or at least, he feels that way). He wants it to stop, but as it says "these humans all suck."

i think the last line 'heads up, damage control thers a ring around her finger, last chance for changing lanes and you missed it by a mile' means he's engaged to a girl and wants to break it off but cant

This song seems to me to have been written in a great state of Depression. It's New Years Eve (as the first verse depicts) and he's wondering if anything is going to change from last year. "The plants were destroyed and the hor'deurves dismantled/I'm not smiling behind this fake veneer/I am often interrupted or completely ignored/but most of all i'm bored."
"I'm trying to find out if my words have any meaning
lackluster and full of contempts when it always ends the same
why won't you listen to me?"
These lines are just him questioning himself. Is what he says what he means? It doesn't matter, no one will listen to him anyway.
The rest of the song is pretty much him just wanting not to exsist, maybe it'd be easier that way.
My personal favorite line is "Head's Up, Damage Control. There's a ring around her finger. Last Chance for changing lanes and you missed it by a mile."
Which to me says, Hey I like this girl, oh well she's betrothed, too bad I can't get over her.
