My Chemical Romance: It's Not a Fashion Statement, It's a Death Meaning
It's Not a Fashion Statement, It's a Death Lyrics
Or what I'll do to you
You get what everyone else gets
You get a lifetime
Do you remember back then when we met?
You told me this gets harder
Well you did
Been holding on forever
Promise me that when I'm...
-
1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:Okay first of all, I love the guitar in this song!
Anyway, no one has really gone in depth with this song and since this is one of my favorite songs on three cheers for sweet revenge; I'm going to take a stab at it.
For what you did to me
and what I'll do to you
you get what everyone else gets
you'll get a lifetime
- I think this is a part of the entire album story. This could be the husband that died in the gun fight speaking from the dead.
Do you remember back when we met
you told me this gets harder
well it did
been holding on forever
promise me that when I'm gone you'll kill my enemies
- the dead husband's ghost/soul is wandering the earth and watching his ex wife (who lived though the gun fight), hence: "been holding on forever."
the damage you've inflicted
temporary wounds
i'm coming back from the dead
and I'll take you home with me
i'm taking back the life you stole
- he is feeling the pain of watching his wife move on and marry another man, "..Damage you've inflicted". For her, when he died they were only "temporary wounds." watching his wife live and not being able to be with her is tearing him apart, "i'm coming back from the dead, and I'll take you home with me."
we never got that far
this helps me to think
all through the night
bright lights that
won't kill me now
or tell me how
just you and I
your starless eyes remain
- here he is thinking about their relationship and all the things they didn't get to do: "we never got that far / ...Think all through the night" this dead husband is also talking about how dying didn't really 'kill' him. Ya know the theory/myth that when you die you see bright lights. So think about it; "bright lights that won't kill me now." he never went into the light, his soul is still alive because her "starless eyes remain." he loves her and couldn't leave.
Hip hip hooray for me
you talk to me
but would you kill me in my sleep
lay still like the dead
from the razor to the rosary
we could lose ourselves
and paint these walls
in pitchfork red
- I think this whole song is about the dead husband's mixed feelings towards his living wife; the lyrics are him speaking. So this part begins with the husband being sarcastic because he's pissed that she is slowly forgetting about him: "hip hip hooray for me, you talk to me." this means she still talks to him. (a lot of people talk to loved ones they have lost, ya know like 'why did you leave me? Or I miss you!) but that must not be enough for him, slowly she's moving on and he hates it...
"lay still like the dead
from the razor to the rosary
we could lose ourselves
and paint these walls
in pitchfork red."
i think this whole part is a flashback from the gun fight. I know painting the walls in pitchfork red is from the gun fight. I couldnt grasp a clear meaning, but I think the razor is from 'cemetery drive' and the rosary is from 'thank you for the venom'. I'm not sure. I think these parts were written for your own interpretation; make what you want out of it.
I will avenge my ghost
with every breath I take
i'm coming back from the dead
and I'll take you home with me
i'm taking back the life you stole
- [avenge (a venged, a venging.): 1. To take vengeance, to exact satisfaction for: to avenge a grave insult.] the dead husband now wants to satisy his ghost and come back from the dead to take his wife home. Taking back the life she stole; he is pissed! He lived with her, married her, loved her, spent a good portion of his life with her then died in a gunfight with her and now she is forgetting about him and dating other men. That is like stealing a life maybe.
This hole you put me in
wasn't deep enough
and I'm climbing out right now
you're running out of places
to hide from me
- this part is simple. When you're married, if your spouse dies and doesn't have his funeral/coffin and all that paid for. You are responsible for setting up the reception and having your husband or wife burried. That's why he's saying: "this hole you put me in". It wasn't deep enough and he wants to come get her back. As you can see his anger has been building up and by now he's really pissed! It's as if he doesn't really want her back anymore. It's more like he wants vengence. Three cheers for sweet revenge!
When you go
just know that I will remember you
if living was the hardest part
we'll then one day be together
- when she goes completely away by forgetting about him or at least not showing any signs of grief over him, he says he will remember her. This part is pretty self explanatory; if their life was hard then he's looking forward to them being together when she dies.
And in the end we'll fall apart
just as the leaves change in color
and then I will be with you
i will be there one last time now
- uncanny flash forward: the end of their relationship. Before he dies their relationship is falling apart. Leaves change in color; like seasons: love is a cycle of emotions. It's happiness, hardships and tribulations over and over. No need to worry about falling apart now because this is not the end. He may die now but it's still not the end. When she takes her finaly cemetery drive, he will be right there with her and this will be the last time. Think.
When you go
just know that I will remember you
i've lost my fear of falling
i will be with you, I will be with you
- she has to live her life. He understands now that she can't sit around grieving forever. He knows in the end, she will be with him. -
its about kill bill. the bride wants revenge from bill "For what you do to me" for putting her in a coma and killing her unborn child "The damage you've inflicted
Temporary wounds
I'm coming back from the dead"
the character in the song obviously once loved the person like in kill bill.
" Lay still like the dead
From the razor to the rosary
We could lose ourselves and paint these walls in pitchfork red" this could refer to the the church massacre
" This hole you put me in
Wasn't deep enough
And I'm climbing out right now"
this could refer to when she is buried alive and escaped it
finally the last section is about the bride finally finding bill and meeting her daughter and then killing bill, and the pain and relief and all the other emotions she feels at the end. "And then I will be with you
I will be there one last time now
When you go, just know that I will remember you
I lost my fear of falling
I will be with you
I will be with you" -

Here's the first album's story, 2 Bonnie and Clyde like gangsters named the demolition lovers get into a big gunfight, and the man dies. In this album, the man makes a deal with the devil, comes back from the dead and is given the task to kill 1000 evil men to see his girl friend again, so he seeks revenge on his killers. As he goes through out this task, he finds out the girl is slowly forgetting about him, and that makes him angry. Now, he is even angrier and more determined to get his revenge, and see her again.
-
I think it could be about the whole "love lost, husband is dead and wants his wife back" thing, or it could be more literal. When I hear this song, I picture a man talking to his enemy. The enemy thought he'd killed the man, but he only killed the body. When he says "I've lost my fear of falling" he's saying that he already died, and it isn't as scary this time around because it can't hurt him anymore.
-
in my opinion, this song is partly about not letting haters affect you, it kind of reminds me of Gerard's 'rise from your own ashes quote' also the title of the songs relates to this.
-
I know it basically fits the whole concept, but based on the title. I think it also may be to do with not letting bullies/haters affect you, hence the 'I'm coming back from the dead' and 'this hole you put me in, wasn't deep enough, and im climbing out right now.' also saying that you shouldn't listen, 'the damage you've inflicted temporary wounds.' see what I mean? I think it has the record concept in it, but you could interpret different messages.
-
Okay so the whole album is supposed to be about a guy and a girl who die in a gun fight, and she goes to heaven and he goes to hell. Then the devil offers him a deal that if he brings him 1000 souls he can go to heaven to be with his girlfriend/wife/whoever she is. I think that this is a song from the guy's point of view coming back to kill the guy that killed him.
-
Well what I think this song is about is something a little bit different. At the beginning when he says
"Do you remember the first day we met you told me this gets harder? Well it did. Been holding on forever."
I think he's referring to how he remembers that when he and his girlfriend started dating, and things started to get rough, she noticed relationships get harder, and they do. Yet he still wants to hold onto this relationship.
"The damage you've inflicted, temporary wounds. Im coming back from the dead...Im taking back the life you stole."
Here I think he's saying that she had hurt him many times before, but the pain was temporary and now he's over her and coming back from being depressed. And he's taking back the life she had stolen from him from being in such a bad relationship.
"We never got that far. This helps me to think all through the night... Just you and I, Your starless eyes remain. "
Here, he's reflecting on how they never really got that far in their relationship, and by reminding himself this, he dosn't feel so bad for it ending. And now it's just him and her, and she's like whatever about the whole situation, referring to her "starless eyes remain". Meaning she still dosn't care for him or what they had.
"Hip hip hooray for me. You talk to me. But would you kill me in my sleep?"
He's being sarcastic to how she decides to talk to him, like if it should be some big honor. And he notices how she really is, not knowing if she can trust her.
"I will avenge my ghost with every breath I take."
And now he's gonna get revenge, payback for everything she made him go through.
"This whole you put me in wasn't deep enough, and I'm climbing out right now. Your running out of places to hide from me."
The depression she put him in from the crappy way she treated him, it wasn't that bad since he's getting right back up on his feet. And apparently she's been trying to run away from hearing all the stuff she did wrong, but she can't run anymore from it anymore.
"And when you go, just know that I will remember you."
He is concluding to her that once she permanently gets out of his life, he still will always remember her.
"And if living was the hardest part then one day we'll be together."
That he thought living was hard, but being with her was even harder for him.
"And in the end well fall apart just like the leaves change in colors."
And with time they'll finally cut each other out of their lives. (Although Gerard has such a beautiful way of saying it<3)
"And then ill be with you, I will be there one last time."
Even though they want out of this forever, specially him, he can't help but just be there this one last time, when they officially move on.
"I lost my fear of falling, I will be with you."
On here I think that he's telling her that he's not so scared for what may come to him, since he already went through the hardest thing he could ever gone through because of her. And he won't literally be with her, but hopefully everything he's told her can stay with her forever. -
Ok-here's what I think: this song is about a dude that was killed by his girlfriend and he wants revenge. He tells about how in the beginning when they first got together she was kind of hard to get along with and they would argue(hence,"you told me this gets harder") but they loved each other. They both promised that they would always protect each other("promise me that when I'm gone you'll kill my enemies"). His girlfriend killed him during one of their altercations so now he's a ghost back for revenge. He's totally over her("the damage you've inflicted, temporary wounds") and now he wants to kill her like she killed him. He reminices about how their relationship never got very far. He dumped everyone else to be with her(just you and I, your starless eyes remain). When he first saw her in high school she always ignored him. He was extremely happy when she talked to him("hip hip hooray for me. You talk to me but would kill me in my sleep") and when they moved in together after high school he would sometimes wonder if she would ever kill him because of the hostile way she acted around him. Sometimes they would both get drunk and fight until they were both injured and bleeding("we can lose ourselves and paint these walls in pitchfork red"). As a ghost he will not stop until he gets his revenge. When she killed him she buried his body in the woods("this hole you put me in wasn't deep enough and I'm comin out right now"). When she sees him she runs away but no matter how far she goes he can always catch her("you're runnin out of places to hide from me"). He tells her if living and running away is hard it'll be worse when they're together again after he kills her or she commits suicide("if living was the hardest part, we'll then one day be together). When they're together it'll be just like when they were on earth(all the arguing and stuff). When she runs again he tell her that he will always remember what she did to him("when you go, just know that I will remember you"). The story ends with her fleeing across the world and him following her.
Yeah I pretty much made all that up....imagination.. -
I think this song reffers to zombies. "I'm comng back from the dead" He's saying zombies come back from the dead to take vengeance on things that occured in their life.(Note: Dawn of the Dead was the band's favorite movie). I think whoever posted the long detailed interpretation is right, but i think he's coming back as a zombie, not a ghost.

PEOPLE. Just because it's a concept album, it doesn't mean that their songs are completely about that concept. People usually write songs about past experiences and feelings. Come on guys. Let's dig deep here. :]
To me, this song is about a guy finally deciding that he's not going to just take shit anymore. Like coming out of depression and wanting revenge on the person that put him in depression in the first place. "This hole you put me in, wasn't deep enough..And I'm climbing out right now. You're running out of places to hide from me." It's about a rebirth if you will. -
okay my interpretation is totally different from what i just skimmed. i think this song is about a guy who never took the chance to fall in love with a girl because he knew she was going to die. and it hurts him later on because he's never really experienced anything good. so really he probably should have taken the chance and let her feel something good for the first time in her life. like this girl probably told this guy that life gets harder and he wasn't exactly sure what that meant and after she's gone he finally gets what she means. he probably thought of her as a really weird girl who was so different from everyone else and eventually he starts to feel for her but then he stops himself from going any further.
but in ways it does seem like the other interpretations people have said. anyways one day these two will be together and things will probably get better.
i don't know if this made sense but i did try.
