My Chemical Romance: Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back Meaning
Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back Lyrics
'Cause the devils got your number tonight
We're never leaving this place alive
But if you sing these words we'll never die
Get off the ledge and drop the knife
Not a victim of a victim's life
Because...

#1 top rated interpretation:I thought it was about Fun Ghoul. "Heart attack in black hair dye" because in Sing, he stays behind. So I always saw it as Fun Ghoul telling them to save themselves and he'll hold them back.
But, also I think it's basically telling us that they'll be there for the fans. They're saving us from alot of the hate in the world. As long as we keep listening to music, as long as we stay hopeful, we're saving ourselves and MCR are holding the hate back -
My interpretation may be WAY off but when I first listened to it, this is how I interpreted it.
So the lyrics "save yourself, I will hold them back tonight" lead me to think this along with the line " We can leave this world, Leave it all behind" and "we can live forever if you've got the time".
So with those lines in mind, I thought that he was saying how he would leave the world with who he is talking to. Like "go ahead, I will hold them back", them being the people preventing the seeing commiting suicide. Preventing them from being "saved" from the world. -
I'm sure this song has a meaning withing the context of the concept album, but I interpret it differently.
I think he's telling a friend that he'll be there for them, and that they don't need to commit suicide ("can you save yourself tonight"). The "them" that he's holding back could be any number of things: people who wronged the friend, metaphorical "demons"/fears/problems... etc. Anyway, it's saying to save yourself and keep going, because someone's got your back! -
From what I've heard, this song was written for Bandit Lee Way (Gerard Way's daughter) so that when she's older, she can look back on this song and know that she can save herself from depression and suicide and drugs, etc.
In other words, I do think it's also out there for the fans. Lots and lots of people don't save themselves, and they think it'd be better if they just killed themselves.
Get off the ledge and drop the knife
is saying don't do it, don't stop living. Because there is someone who still cares about you (like this band cares about what happens to you).
We can leave this world leave it all behind says that this place isn't perfect, but that's okay. It can be left alone. And that's all I know. -
It's basically a hopeful song. They are telling their fans that they will always give them support through music.
-
I think it is basically saying that they will save you and help you with their music as long as you work to keep yourself safe and happy emotionally. Also as long as we keep listening, they will be around.
