Welcome to the Black Parade Lyrics

When I was a young boy
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band

He said "Son when you grow up
Would you be
The savior of the broken
The beaten and the damned?"

He said "Will you
Defeat them
Your demons

Okay I love this song and music vid and the band but this is what I think when I'm listening to it. Here it goes-----

When I was a young boy
My father took me into the city
    To see a marching band
He said, "Son, when you grow up
Would you be the savior of the broken
The beaten and the damned?? (a man is talking to the author (his son) and is asking the son to grow up and to take over the family business---of killing evil people)

He said, "Will you defeat them
Your demons and all the non-believers
The plans that they have made?
Because one day, I'll leave you
A phantom to lead you in the summer
To join the Black Parade" (asking him is he will grow up and not be bad and to join the black parade and lead it---the black parade is a group of righteous killers)

    Sometimes I get the feeling
    She's watching over me
And other times I feel like I should go
And through it all, the rise and fall
    The bodies in the streets
And when you're gone we want you all to know (hes saying that "she" meaning his grandma who died will never be gone to him and that people just walking on the streets cannot compare)

We'll carry on, we'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on, we'll carry on
And in my heart, I can't contain it
The anthem won't explain it (he's talking about his family members deathes)

And while that sends you reeling
    From decimated dreams
Your misery and hate will kill us all
So paint it black and take it back
Let's shout out loud and clear
Do you fight it to the end? (he is talking to the devil saying that his hate will kill people(thats why the devil does that)

We hear the call to carry on, we'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on, we'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
    You're weary widow marches (same)

On and on we carry through the fears
    Disappointed faces of your peers
    Take a look at me
'Cause I could not care at all (he is saying that he doesn't care if people think that he is "bad")

Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Though you try, you'll never break me
We want it all, we wanna play this part (hes saying that no one will make him someone he doesn't want to be...and that his warriors will take on anything)

Won't explain or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scar
Give a cheer for all the broken
Listen here, because it's only (he is saying that he is not ashamed for what he does and he will show it off someday)

    I'm just a man, I'm not a hero
Just a boy who wanna sing his song
    Just a man, I'm not a hero
I don't care! (he is saying that he is not a hero because he is just doing what he is suppose to be doing)

We'll carry on, we'll carry on
And though you're dead and gone, believe me
Your memory will carry on, you'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated
You're weary widow marches on (same)(BTW "weary widow" means everyone who is alive in the family)

Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Though you try, you'll never break me
We want it all, we wanna play this part
    (We'll carry on)

Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Though you try, you'll never break me
We want it all, we wanna play this part
    (We'll carry on)

Yesssssssss...it's completely about a patient and death and whatnot. But i feel there is a strict difference between "death" and "afterlife." Afterlife is subsequent to death...u cant experience afterlife prior to dying..right? Death itself may be a black parade...finally being free of the life, and all its unwelcomed pains..so in this sense, the black parade is a celebration to end of life...I wont say tho, that the celebration will last..because of course (to me) comes afterlife...and for some, there will no longer be a party...I was never taught that their is a specific bracket of time between death and judgement. So, one could party in the black parade for a while before being sent to either heaven or hell...((If thats what you believe)) In the meantime tho, why not party in a parade? It would allow time to find people you who have long departed you for the parade...Afterall, hang and party with them again, because theres no guarentee that the both of you will party together after judgement.

I think this song could be evil or good. He could either be the savior of the evil by making them better people. Or it could be about him leading people to be evil.

This is a song about Jesus, about how God told him what 2 do and he was frightened but he finally realised what he had 2 do. All the members of the band are christians

I do not think the song is about death, or even really much about a father. I interpret it to be about a person who has experienced inpatient acute psychiatric treatment and is left with some kind of legacy to heal others going on through the same. He denies this legacy in the end, to the extent that he says, I am one of them, I am proud of that, there is nothing to be fixed, but the world that created such insanity.....

When Gerard says, sumthin ab't being the saviour of the beaten & the damned an defeating the demons & the non-beleivers, there seems 2 B sumthin revolutionary or political behind it. I think here the death itself is considered as a welcoming revolution

I honestly think this is a song about a family's struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. The singer/patient...is recalling the good memories of his father by going into the city. However, his father is losing a fight with alcohol. The father wonders if his son will also become addicted and wonders if his son will defeat his demons, or fall victim to drug abuse. Later his father dies, and the son and his mother try to pick up the pieces. "although your dead and gone, your memory will carry on.." As the singer grows older he also falls victim to drug abuse and alcohol, which explains why he thinks "his mother is watching over him"

..he knows he needs to change, but can't. "though you try, you'll never break me".. and in the end the son gets close to death but makes a change. He remembers how and why his father died and he decides that he is going to change. o_O

This song actual goes deeper then gerard way lets on its about the father mostly who realizes that the son is going to be the hero in his story that he has to train him to destroy all the monsters that bet him in life and to carry on his fathers legocy and be the savior of all the unsaved.

Ready, at first what i thought was his father playing the role of God sent his son into the city to see the marching band called the black parade, taking place of a sinful world, and he said to save the broken beaten and damned, which were miss treated people in the world. Also he said something about "all those none believers and their plans" being none christians or "Believers in God" but now that i read all of the other interpretations that makes a lot more sense but that will always be what the song means to me.

I know this isnt actually what it means, but does anyone else think that it could be reffering to the holocaust? it
could be about a boy whose dad was taken away by the nazis; the black parade; and now the boy is joining the resistance. thats where the rest of the song would fit in. it was just an idea but does anyone agree?

I think that this song discusses death in a very unusual way. In the beginning of the song, it talks about the narrator spending time with his father at a parade. Then, his father dies of unknown causes. The narrator talks about the death of his father and how he soon moves on to death, which is personified as a parade.

I think that it shows that every person sees death in a different way. Some in a happy way, celebrating life, and some in a sad way, bringing up death. In the narrators eyes, he views death as a parade because of his memories with his father.

Really? "this song is about how a character, the patient, is being led into death..." is not looking into the lyrics at ALL. Tha's what they are literally saying, yes, but the point is that it's not just a story about how death comes to you, etc. [Can't believe no one else figured this out but] it's really an anthem to the downfallen, the emo kids, the people that need saving. Note:

-'Won't explain, or say I'm sorry, I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scar' (I don't need to explain why I'm the way I am to you, I'm just going to be myself)

-"Do or die, you'll never make me, because the world, will never take my heart. Though you try, you'll never break me, we want it all, we wanna play this part" (You can't change who I am)

-"Son when you grow up, will you be, the savior of the broken, the beaten and damned?" (sort of self explanitory, saying that he plans to one day lead the broken)

-"A world that sends you reeling, from decimated dreams, your misery and hate will kill us all" (Bullies, teachers, parents, anyone who hates on you for being different)

-"So paint it black and take it back, let's shout it loud and clear, defiant to the end we hear the call, to carry on" (Paint it black? Be emo, punk, goth, etc., and be yourself freely)

The lyrics of this song are the real reason this song has so many fans, it's calling on it's emo listeners to be proud and brave as part of the black parade. Duh.

Actually, this song, as described by Gerard when he recently appeared on fuse, says the man in the song, they called the patient, is dying in a hospital. And his most treasured memory was when his father took him to a parade when he was a young boy. And gerard says he believes that when you die, death comes to you in any form you want it to. So as this man is dying, remembering his father and the parade, death comes to him as a black parade < I copied and pasted that from somewhere.... but it's also about how when you die. you are not forgotten and Gerard said in an interview he wants his funeral to be like that...

R.I.P Hannah who died after apparently getting an idea from the song lyrics ' your memory will carry on ' and hung herself.. which caused a lot of bad press to my chemical romance... which caused a protest called the black parade.

Here is the most general meaning; the Patient dies of cancer, and is met by his fondest memory: that of a parade-the Black Parade ("When I was a young boy..."). Inside are a bunch of lonely, defeated characters that need to be saved. They ask him to save him, but then says, "No, I can't save you..." (Just a boy, I'm not a hero...")He persuades them that their memory will carry on, and they will not be forgotten.

This could be a continuation of the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge story, the Patient being Helena's lover. He says, "Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me..." meaning that Helena, who's in Heaven, is protecting him.
"And through it all, the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets," could mean the thousand evil souls he had to kill.

I commend everyone on their interpretations, but the real true meaning of the song is to be tooken in a literal sense...line for line. True enough everyone thinks that most of the song's lyrics are metaphors, but their truely not. This song is just a little hint of what's to come in the furture with a much deeper hidden meaning!!!! How do I know this...you ask? Let's just say I'm a special messenger that had to deliver a message to you all on behalf of The Black Parade!!!
