This is Gospel Lyrics

This is Gospel for the fallen ones
locked away in permanent slumber.
Assembling their philosophies from pieces of broken memories.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
This is the beat of my heart.
This is the beat of my heart.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,...

To me this song is talking about God.

"This is gospel for the fallen ones" & "This is gospel for the vagabonds"
religion is only for those who are "lost".

"Assembling their philosophies" From pieces of broken memories"

Religion is based on "broken memories".

"The gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds"

the ones who are\were against religion and got bullied for it.

"If you love me let me go" & "truth be told, I never was yours"

this is to god. if you love me, then why do you make me do stuff and put bounds on my will? if you love me let me go, let me do and think what i want to.

"Ne'er-do-wells and insufferable bastards. confessing their apostasies led away by imperfect impostors"

Refers to religion people who pretend to know the "perfect" (=imperfect impostors) and lead other people to believe them, claiming their right.

Don't get me wrong, i don't hate religion. I don't hate god either. I just believe god is not real and religion is for the ones who are too weak to figure out stuff themselves, so they accept the idea god is real and when you die you go to heaven when actually no one knows what's gonna happen after you die, and the trials to prove god is real and the bible is not lying\was made up are completly unrealistic, and, like the song says, based on "broken (never proved) memories".

I feel its a struggle between who we truly are and the and the fronts we put up for the world. He's asking conformity to let him free.

Isn't this song about Spencer and his addiction?
An how he is doing the best he can to get better?

I personally think its about the band. All the changes it has had to go through. and that he wants everyone to forget the past and accept the new.

but then again i also think its either about a relationship or about griefing over a lost love one

"This is gospel for the fallen ones
    Locked away in permanent slumber
    Assembling their philosophies
    From pieces of broken memories"

Literally, this is the teachings for the 'fallen ones' or those without religion or a defined spiritual path. Locked in permanent slumber because they cannot reach their true potential without spiritual guidance. (*Note, you don't have to have a god to have a spiritual path.) Assembling philosophies aka their Path, from broken memories and bits and pieces. This first part is very literal in nature, to me.

"Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart [x2]
The gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds
But they haven’t seen the best of us yet"

This is the beat of my heart refers to the True Self pulsing inside, and also refers back to the song itself aka "this song/gospel is the beat of my heart." Gnashing teeth and criminal tongues is the Ego/s, striving against the odds fighting with the True Self. But they haven't seen the best of us yet, refering to the audience of fallen ones, basically saying that their Ego's won't win and their True Selves will.

"If you love me let me go [x2]
‘Cause these words are knives that often leave scars
    The fear of falling apart
And truth be told, I never was yours
The fear, the fear of falling apart"

If you love (you) let you go. This refers to the Sacrifice of the false self to get to the True Self. These words are knives that often leave scars, the process of sacrificing the false self is painful, and its not easy, and often leaves the individual scarred for life, but better off for it. I never was yours, your false self never really belonged to YOU because it was a shell, a mask, not the REAL you at all. The fear of falling apart refers to the fear of making the leap into sacrafice, for fear of losing yourself completely, which is the point.

"This is gospel for the vagabonds,
    Never-do-wells and insufferable bastards
    Confessing their apostasies
    Led away by imperfect impostors"

This is gospel for the [travellers], [good-for-nothings], and [intolerable] bastards, self explanatory. Confessing their apostasies, an apostasy is when you give up a religion or a belief of some sort. Led away by imperfect impostors, referring back to the audience's Ego/s again.

"Don’t try to sleep through the end of the world
    Bury me alive
'Cause I won’t give up without a fight"

I think this is a call to the audience to awaken and go through the process to bring out the True Selves, and to strive on to their truest potential.

So overall this a song about spiritual awakening, this is a message to never be afraid to be yourself, to never be afraid of your ego, to never give up, and this is a call to wake up.

Wake up my brothers and sisters, it's time to come out and play. If you love me, let me go.

To me, and this may seem cliche, but I feel as though this song is describing a relationship that someone feels stuck/trapped in, like the person is holding onto them despite it not being good anymore.

"This is gospel for the fallen ones
    locked away in permanent slumber"
    - For the fallen ones (those people who fell in love and fell into a relationship) and who are "locked away in permanent slumber" (stay in the relationship because they're stuck and may not even notice it is not doing them good anymore, they aren't awake enough to see it)

    "Assembling their philosophy
    from pieces of broken memories"
    - The reasons that person is holding onto the relationship is made up of the good memories they shared in the past, but these 'good times' aren't very common anymore.

"This is the beat of my heart"
    - This is how I feel inside.

    "Gnashing teeth and criminal tongues
    conspire against the odds
but they haven't seen the best of us yet"
    - 'Gnashing teeth'could be he is just dying to get out of the relationship, or that the other person in the relationship is mistreating him and using harsh words to keep him in it. Maybe even manipulating him.

"If you love me let me go"
    - Speaks for itself. He wants out and if she loves him she must let him go.

"Cause these words are knives and often leave scars"
    - Her unkind words are hurting him.

"And truth be told I never was yours
the fear, the fear of falling apart"
    - He never really felt like he was 'hers' and the relationship was ever great. But he stayed in it for fear of being hurt when it is over, 'fear of falling apart'

The rest is all a very similar interpretation. It is just what it means to me.

I think this song is about those who have lost someone. "If you love me, then let me go" I think is referring to how family members grief over a relatives death and don't want to let them go.

I believe that the song is about Brendon changing with how he and the rest of the band have more of mainstream style and that he expects us (the fans) to be understanding. (:
