Heroin, ride the pony, hello?? Definitely drug use and what will come of it. Also could be interpreted as a love song but ridthe pony gives it away I think. Wow what grunge history with pearl jam, soundgarden, temple of the dog, and mother love bone.

I think it's about his drug use and coming down off the high from heroin

I think you nailed it with your interpretation. However, they first covered this song at a show in Las Vegas in 2000 not 2008. It was on the 10th anniversary of their first show ever playing together, not their first album

The meaning of crown of thorns by Pearl Jam was originally set in motion by Andy wood, the late lead singer of mother love bone. In the song, and he referred to himself as Mr. faded glory, and he who ride the pony must someday fall. My initial interpretation is that of a missed opportunity at real love, because feeling good, being in love, was his crown of thorns. It is a song of pain, regret, and the never-ending search for true happiness. Eddie Vedder took a huge risk, in choosing this song from them the mother love bone catalog, however, on the 10th anniversary of the release of Pearl Jam's first studio album, Eddie lived up to his billing, as one of the premier front men of our generation and on that night in 2008 Andy Wood smiled.
