REO Speedwagon: Time For Me To Fly Meaning
Song Released: 1978
Time For Me To Fly Lyrics
I've been up and down for you
But I just can't get any relief
I've swallowed my pride for you
I've lived and lied for you
But you still make me feel like a thief
You got me stealin' your love away
'Cause you...
-
I believe that he is singing the song through the eyes of his girl.
She is actually the one that’s doing the “flying”. She is the one who feels like she is “stealing your love away cause you never give it” (i.e. it’s like “pulling teeth” to get an emotional reaction out of you). She feels it would be better for both of them to call it quits: although he feels like if they just stick it out something’s got to give and they’ll “work it out” because after all they are “really in love.” -
I think the fourth verse sums up the song as saying after years of devotion to this women who clearly doesn't return the intimacy he is emotionally putting into their relationship whether that be sexually or intellectually he believes, It's time for him to fly.
-
Honestly, I think he is in a relationship up with someone who no longer wants to have sex. He's already regretting living through the best part of his life without an intimate relationship. Thus the "stealing your love away cause you never give it. Peeling the years away
And we can't relive it".
They put up a front: "You said we'd work it out
You said that you had no doubt
That deep down we were really in love
Oh, but I'm tired of holding on
To a feeling I know is gone"
They lie outwardly to the world.
Been there done that for 10 years with a woman. After 10 years , I gave up. It was time for me to fly. -
He had a great time being with her to start with, but now he's losing the connection with her. He's tired of all the pain he has to go through(the line I make you laugh, and you make me cry..clearly saying it's too hard for him). He has no choice but says, "it's time for me to fly".
-
it means he's tired of being her boy toy and he says it's over and time to move on.
