Savatage: Believe Meaning
Believe Lyrics
You've ended up with heart in hand
A child alone
On your own
Retreating
Regretful for the things you're not
And all the things you haven't got
Without a home
A heart of stone
Lies bleeding
And for...

I agree the song Alone You Breath from Handful of Rain is an incredible song based in tribute to Criss Oliva (original guitarist) not original singer. I disagree with a previous post that Believe was originally Alone you Breathe due to Believe being done 2 albums prior to Handful of Rain on the Steets album. Criss plays magnificent guitar on Streets and the next album Edge of Thorns. Unfortunately a drunk driver took him away shortly after EOT. I think Believe is about not giving up and trusting in the light in each of us. Our past dark choices don’t have to define us and if we Believe we are worthy of the light (happiness, salvation, freedom from the darkness) we can achieve it. Whether through faith in a deity, friends, or in ourselves, we don’t have to submit to despair. An incredibly powerful and positive song that I feel can uplift a broken soul. You just have to Believe!!!

Hyper is correct.
I come from a theological back ground and if you strip away the religion aspect of what the Bible states this is the path to salvation.
You can live in the world and never find your way to heaven on your own. But Jesus stated you believe in me and I will be with you.
He died to give us this path of forgiveness and he is the only way to eternal life with God.
You don’t have to be Catholic, Baptist, Methodist or any other religion as this is about the trust and belief between you and God.
That is what is so sad is the path is so clear and simple yet many complicate it.
Even many other religions are very similar in a superior ruler over sees us and they only ask to believe. Only the Jewish and Muslims follow a different path and the Bible addresses this too. -
To really know what the band meant with this song, we should first know its origin:
It's originally a song from Savatage's Handful of Rain album, the song is called "Alone You Breathe" and it's a tribute to Criss Oliva the main singer of Savatage who had recently passed away, and it is a much longer song and here are the full lyrics of the song and a link to listen to it on YT:

"ALONE YOU BREATHE (CRISS'S SONG)"
You were never one for waiting
Still I always thought you'd wait for me
And have you from your dreams awakened
And from where you are what do you see
Which of us is now in exile
Which in need of amnesty
Are you now but an illusion
In my mind alone you breathe
You believed in things that I will never know
You were out there drowning but it never showed
Till inside a rainswept night you just let go
You've thrown it all away
And now we'll never see the ending to the play
The grand design, the final line
And what was meant to be
In the dark a distant runner
Now has disappeared into the night
Leaving us to stand and wonder Staring from this end into your life
You believed in things that I will never know
You were out there drowning but it never showed
'Til inside a rainswept night you just let go
You've thrown it all away
And now we'll never see the ending to the play
The grand design, the final line
And what was meant to be
And if this is all illusion
Nothing more than pure delusion
Clinging to a fading fantasy
Like Icarus who heeds the calling
Of a sun but now is falling
As the feathers of his life fall free
Can you see
See
Tomorrow and after
You tell me what am I to do
I stand here believing
That in the dark there is a clue
Perhaps inside this midnight sky
Perhaps tomorrow's newborn eyes
Or could it be, we'll never know
And after all this was the show
What am I to do
Gotta get back
Gotta get back
Gotta get back
What am I to do
Gotta get back
Gotta get back
Gotta get back
What am I to do
Standing on a dream isn't what it seems
Could we then reclaim a dream refused
Knowing what we know could we let it go
Realizing that all the years are used
Tomorrow and after
You tell me what am I to do
I stand here believing
That in the dark there is a clue
I am the way, I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes, I feel your dreams
And in the dark I hear your screams
Tomorrow and after
You tell me what am I to do
I stand here believing
That in the dark there is a clue -
I was separated from my daughter before she was born. After 20 years we reunited. This song speaks to the time in our lives we were separate and the future we have. It hit me so hard I have been obsessed with finding a way to be able to sing this to her with an instrumental or karaoke version. No luck so far...
I hope my interpretation doesnt offend someone else but it is without question to me, a song written for me. -
The meaning here is as simple as Jesus plan for us.
He states he is the way the truth and the light. He promises to be with us and all we have to believe.
This song is very simple it is not about a man or woman specifically it is about someone with a wasted life.
They lived their life their way till they found they were left with an empty life in the end with little hope.
Jesus has promised if we believe he will be with us as we face judgment if we accept and believe he will be right there with us as we stand judgment on our lives.
Gods plan for us is really very simple but due to man it has been made overly complicated and difficult by some.
There is only one God but how many religions do we have? Religion is of Man Salvation is of God.
You can be a sinner but if you accept Christ and believe he will be with you all the way to the to the throne of Judgment.
Because of this the song here can be interpreted based on what ever sin you can think of and troubled life one may have had.
This song is a powerful message but such a simple one anyone can understand the plan given. -
I see this song from a completely different angle. I work with people in recovery, and this song is a message from Jesus to people struggling to overcome their addictions and bad decisions. He promises comfort and salvation and all He asks in return is belief.
"I am the way
I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I hear your hopes
I feel your dreams
And in the dark
I hear your screams
Don't turn away
Just take my hand
And when you make your final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
And all I ask of you is
Believe" -
I found Hossain's interpretation incredibly good. However I disagree with "Savatage is suggesting an adulterer as a messiah of God in this song 'BELIEVE'." statement. Because the lyrics say:
"So after all these one night stands
You've ended up with heart in hand
A child alone
On your own
Retreating
Regretful for the things you're not
And all dreams you haven't got
Without a home
A heart of stone
Lies bleeding"
I consider that the adulterer was actually the woman.
The part:
"I never wanted to know
Never wanted to see
I wasted my time
Till time wasted me
Never wanted to go
Always wanted to stay
'Cause the person I am
Are the parts that I play
So I plot and I plan
Hope and I scheme
To the lure of a night
Filled with unfinished dreams
And I'm holding on tight
To a world gone astray
As they charge me for years
I can't pay"
I agree that is the woman who is saying it. -
*The meaning can vary completely if one
night stand does not mean informal.
Savatage is suggesting an adulterer as a messiah of God in this song 'BELIEVE'.
A woman who had committed a lot of adultries have ended up with a child to take care of and she is regretful about what she couldnot be in her life.
"AND for all the roads...you had to leave behind"-it means she had followed a wrong path(away from God) and outcome was failure of what she dreamed to be.
"I am the way....I hear your screams"-these are simply the properties of God.
"Dont turn away.....And all I ask of you, believe"-God is asking her to follow HIS shown path.when she makes her final stand(after death)God will be there and HE will never leave. All God asks her is to believe.
"your childhood eyes were so intense....(the next three paras)you had to keep inside)It is complicated but might mean-when she was young she had to exchange her innocence by committing adultery to gain success but her sins were caught and she had to pay instead for what she has done.she had to go through a lot of sufferings for this and lost everything for this.
"I never wanted to know.....I can no longer pay"-these lines are by the woman.
