Soundgarden: Fell On Black Days Meaning
Song Released: 1994
Fell On Black Days Lyrics
Has come to life
And whatsoever I've fought off
Became my life
Just when everyday
Seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded
And now I'm doing time
Now I'm doing time
'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black...

Someone said it earlier but it bears repeating. I think most everyone that has given their view is close. I believe it is all of the above. Yes, he is depressed (and perhaps b/p) but he's depressed cause he thinks he let everyone down by falling back into the traps of heroin. I am currently watching my 27 year old son go thru the same thing. After several years of being clean, he had a black day last week and relapsed. Horrible scurge that heroin is!! As an old dude that has seen more bands than I can remember, the loss of Chris Cornell hit me very hard cause i used to look at him and think..."He made it - so will my son". Now, i'm not so sure.

It means what's the point to it all.Your born alone and you die alone.

What he said he would never become he became. The people that depended on him he let down. If you liked him he hurt you if you loved him he really hurt you. Crucified between two thieves guilt and shame and remorse of yesterday and fear anxiety and worried of tomorrow and not knowing how to deal with it is a bad place to be.

I interpret song as from someone who is in throes of despair or depression. Very powerful lyrics relate that the pain he is trying so deeply to avoid has indeed fallen upon him. The Black Cloud has enveloped him and will not so easily release him. That's what 'doin time' refers to. Not literally being in prison physically but rather being imprisoned by your own mind. Awesome song.

He's Definitely bipolar. Months wings and regrets the past he can't turn back and he hurt the ones who love him the most the ones that he could've trusted and the one that got away.
-
I think it is about someone with boarderline personality disorder, I have it.. and it sounds EXACTLY how I feel. The fake smile, the one you cuddle you now put down, the sunspots have faded, all classic signs of someone with bpd
-
Heroin... for sure. He fell on black days when he started injecting himself with black tar heroin... we all know it. At least I do.

The song is clearly about being severely depressed. If you've ever been there you understand what a "black day" is. It's about those days when everything goes to shit. Right when you started to think that maybe things could work out for you, this curse comes back to remind that you belong to it. You end up "doing time" for escaping from your fate for even a second, and pay for it with everything positive in your life. And you're left with nothing but a feeling of defeat...can't do anything right and can't be happy for a moment without something falling through the cracks. Never wanted it to be this way but who would've known it would get so bad? A black day. :l
Unfortunately, I know exactly what he's talking about. And surely, I have fallen on black days before...and will again. Love the song though. -
I believe that this song tells a story of how his life completely takes a turn for the worst. Everything that he once believed was beautiful and pure has suddenly become ugly. People have begun to think less of this man and all impressions of him have suddenly changed for the worst.
I also believe that this song is about getting arrested and going to prison. The references to 'doing time' and 'Whatsoever I've Feared, Has come to life'. Everyone fears going to prison. I believe that this mans life has turned for the worst and he was once considered a noble citizen in society. People respected him, however, he did something wrong and all of a sudden everyone has changed their impressions of him and he is nothing. However, although life has changed a lot for him. He doesn't mind because he knows how good of a person he is himself. He doesn't care about what others think of him. -
Being depressed.
