American Dream Lyrics

When success is equated with excess
The ambition for excess wrecks us
As the top of the mind becomes the bottom line
When success is equated with excess

If your time ain't be nothing but money
I start to feel really bad for you,...

It's talking about how society is obsessed with money and feeling caught in a trap of capitalism.
"When success is equated with excess, the ambition for excess wrecks us"
means that we want more and more because we think it is a symbol of success"
"When your time gives you nothing but money, you start to feel really bad for your honey, maybe honey put your money where your mouth's been running if your time gives you nothing but money." talks about how he spends his time and he's earning a lot of money but at the same time he's losing the relationships he has.
"This ain't my american dream, i want to live and die for bigger things" he is realising there is more to life, and that maybe he is living what people consider the American Dream, but it isn't what he expected because he doesn't feel whole or satisfied.
"I'm so sick of seeing red, white, blue and green, that ain't my american dream." red white and blue refer to the american flag but green refers to money, and he sees money becoming part of the american ideal.
"I want out of this machine, it doesn't feel like freedom." He has realised that capitalism feels like a trap, because he never has enough, instead of feeling free.
