The Decemberists: This is why We Fight Meaning
This is why We Fight Lyrics
Come the avarice,
Come the war,
Come hell.
Come attrition,
Come the reek of bones,
Come attrition,
Come hell.
Chorus:
This is why,
Why we fight,
Why we lie awake,
And this is why,
This is why we fight.
When we die,
We will...

This is, or could be interpreted as a Terran Patriotic (Matriotic?) song. It could be done as a video with children, natural scenes, domestic scenes with "This is Why We Fight" We will not surrender. If we die, then we die with our hands unbound.
It's defiant, but not bombastically so. It's saying "Come get some", but in a calm voice -

This seems rather clear if you do not over think too much. Avarice is greed; attrition generally refers to wearing down your enemy by causing continuous loses to their personell. It can also refer to repenting for a sin due to fear rather than for the love of God; kill someone when you believe you are in the right and you repent out of fear because you know it is still wrong . It is a statement on what drives war and the fact that hell follows war. We die with our arms unbound because we believe in our causes; some valid, some not.

I see it as an Apocolyptic statement of sorts. In light of all the religious persecution in the world today. Predominately of the Christian faith and the church of Christ.
This is why we fight , come hell. "the gates of hell shall never prevail against it" . . . Matt 16:18 . . . -
Everyone is saying it has to do with war. However, there are other fights. What about the fight for civil rights all through the 50s (I think)? Although I doubt it, since in the music video it showed what looked like English soldiers and Pheasants in the colonial days. Just a thought.

Watched the video. I believe 2 possible messages: 1) I sense a little bit of mocking of war, the idea of war, with many of it's ridiculous practices and activities. and 2) It is a statement that the individual(s) should fight for causes, fight for what they believe in, fight to make life better, fight for the good, whatever our beliefs, even if it is anti-war.

I like that it has children in the music video. To me it shows that kids need to fight for themselves when they are going through tough times and that even though things may not always end happily, at least it will end in freedom and having a voice.

I think it has to do with war and why we go to war. It's a deep song and I love it the video so great to .

I like the sense of suffering that is portrayed in these lyrics; however, more so, I appreciate the sense of his bravery to take it head on. There in ability in all of us not to run but to stand and fight, even when Hell itself is on the way. Admist feelings of fear, courage can be an emotion too.
-
I think the song is about "The troubles" in Ireland. The song to me is naming the reasons why they fight, as some people may not understand the old emotions and reasons behind "The Troubles"

I just figured it was about someone who new that tough times were on the way and he is just reminding himself he will be ready for whatever happens
