I think it's about a man who leaves his pregnant wife to fight in the civil war, but he doesn't come back, and his wife is sad and lonely, but she can still feel his presence in the wind, and in the memories they shared: when they met and how they loved eachother. and someday they will see each other again.

This song is about a soldier that leaves behind his pregnant sweetheart in one of the Carolinas to fight in the civil war. Although he is not physically home with her he feels a deep connection to her and says that if she looks for him in the son he will come on the breath of the wind.
