The Killers: I Can't Stay Meaning
I Can't Stay Lyrics
And the stars, they all aligned
I knew I had to make my decision
But I never made the time
No, I never made the time
In the dark, for a while now
I can't stay, so far

#1 top rated interpretation:This song is about a man that is having an affair "In the dark, for a while now, I can't stay". He is married but is really happiest when he is with her. He feels guilt about what he's done each time he has to leave her and go home to his wife "Riding my decision home". His wife finds out about the affair and forgives him "my forgiver found the sun/son" Could be he had a child with his mistress. He gets over it by rationalizing that lots of people have affairs "I'm not the only one". He still dreams about his love and imagines what it would be like to be with her and not have to worry about anyone finding out "we'll parade around without game plans, obligation or alarm". He regrets never taking the time to decide between who he married and who he really loves "I never made the time".

Suicide. He can't stay. He's been In the dark for a while now

I think he got a DUI. He made a bad decision, and now he's on a bicycle... "riding my decision home". That's also why he can't stay so far, cause he doesn't want to have to ride his bike that long distance.

No, it's not about an affair. It's about how Brandon feels when he has to leave his wife and kids when he goes on tour ("For a while, now I can't stay"). It's clear he yearns for the simple times with "a majesty on my doorstep and a little boy in her arms" (his family at the time, before he fathered more children)and how all the other music stuff like press ("game plan", "obligation") gets in the way

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
-
It is about knocking up a girl and leaving her, over, and over again.
