Thrice: Stare at the Sun Meaning
Stare at the Sun Lyrics
keys for doors that don't exist
I crack my teeth on pearls
I tear into the history
Show me what it means to me in this world
Yeah, in this world
'Cause I am due for a miracle

This is my interpretation. I'm only 19, but this song related to me in the following way:
"i sit here clutching useless lists,
keys for doors that don't exist I crack my teeth on pearls I tear into the history
show me what it means to me in this world
yeah, in this world"
I agree that this person has considered suicide, but his faith in god has stopped him. He has all these plans and views on life, but none of them are working out. "i sit here clutching useless lists..".. "i crack my teeth on pearls.."
tearing into history is reading the bible. He's seeking guidance.
"show me what it means to me.. " I think here he is asking god to show him the purpose of living in this world.
"'cause I am due for a miracle
i'm waiting for a sign
i'll stare straight into the sun
and I won't close my eyes
till I understand or go blind"
he's waiting for a miracle, obviously.. And a sign.
stare at the sun I think is a metaphor for the heavens. He'll keep looking towards god and seek god's help til he "understands or go blind", or til he finds his purpose or dies. This could be meaning he'll be searching for his purpose until he dies and he won't stop- (go blind.)
"i see the parts but not the whole I study saints and scholars both
no perfect plan unfurls
do I trust my heart or just my mind
why is truth so hard to find in this world
yeah in this world"
he sees how he should do good deeds in life, but doesn't understand why since he is feeling so lost. I guess he does good to get god's blessings, but so far, he hasn't seen it yet.
"i study saints and scholars both" he's reading the bible, and following god's word.
(if you've seen the music video, this could be why all the pages are falling everywhere around dustin's beautiful body -ahem-)
he still does not see his purpose in life.(no perfect plan unfurls)
his heart says follow god, but his mind says something different, not quite sure. It could be to end his life or give up on seeking god.
"why is truth so hard to find..."
pretty self explanatory and extremely true!
"i know that there's a point i've missed
a shrine or stone I haven't kissed
a scar that never graced my wrist
a mirror that hasn't met my fist
but I can't help feeling like i'm"
here I believe he's talking about his sins. He might not be the perfect christian, perhaps lying here and there, missing church, but he's implying he hasn't done too much to deserve to feel suicidal. So he's confused. He's aware he has "missed" or failed at making god happy 24/7, but still doesn't think he deserves to feel so empty.
He cuts himself and breaks mirrors out of frustration. Maybe because he's striving for attention from the almighty. Although he feels committing suicide from cutting is the best way, he still feels like he's due for a miracle.
"i wont close my eyes"
is definitely the most powerful lyrics in this song saying he will not give up on god and knows god will not give up on him.

I think this song is about (what I presume) a suicidal person who think he is due for a miracle, so he will stare into the sun and if he doesn't go blind (the miracle), then he knows that there is a meaning for life

This song is amazing and it's about he is so determined and so strong that he would "stare straight into the sun" and not close his eyes. Symbolizing strength and power. He'll never give up no matter what.
Im due for a miracle,
im waiting for a sign,
ill stare straight into the sun,
and I won't close my eyes,
till I understand or go blind.
its an inspirational and really well played song
