Tool: Eulogy Meaning
Song Released: 1998
Eulogy Lyrics
He had a lot of nothing to say.
We’ll miss him. (2x)
We’re gonna miss him (2x)
So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren’t afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don’t cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs...
-
i know it seems easily that this song has to do with Jesus or something religious
but i think its easily about L Ron Hubbard...
connect the peices.. it makes perfect sense -
i believe this song has to do about hiks death and the blame and anger maynard has against jesus im not a relegious gyu but i know when something bad happens that we csnt controll we always bleam god so for me is for the commidian and relegion.

i'll quote something up from MTV: "you think you know, but you have no idea!"
tool is very much linked up with secret societies.. they're drummer's father is a free mason. a mason knows way too much than you know!... tool is a very intelligent band. so don't insult it by saying you think you know whats they're song means... as maynard always tries to tell us, "do your homework people!"
"read between the lines" is a prefect allegory for this one! -
It is definitely not about Bill Hicks. Hicks carried the ultimate message of choosing love over fear. Please watch his Revelations show. The lyrics are rather inflammatory towards whoemever the message is intended, and we know that Maynard and Hicks were close friends, so it can't be about him.
But like others have said, it could be about someone in particular or nobody in particular. Just simply learn from the message. -
Wow, For this song not to have anything to do with Christ, a bunch of tool fans ure make the reference. Maynard is a sick fucker. Its obvious that he worships himself, which is satanism. With that being said any of his music is garbage for the brain. If you spend this much time and energy where you write a 20 paragraph story in 2 paragraphs about this song...you just might need to go to Church. You would get more out of it than this crap...Now where is my Slayer album....?
-
It's about Kurt Cobain
-
That's why I'm happy my english is poor. I don't understand words and focus on music.
-
anyone who doesn't understand the simplicity of this song is dumb. don't overthink it. Maynard is simply trying to state the fact that anyone in this day in age that still believes in religion (as a FAITH), is living and believing in a dying society. its simply not true

Aenima was released oct. 1 1996. Eulogy lirycs depic a messiah like character who prophesize his own death. Aenima lirycs talk about the dream and wish of the destruccion of the cultural L.A. gansta wannabes, hollywood ilution and california stereotypes.
Fuck L Ron Hubbard and
Fuck all his clones.
Fuck all these gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes.
Learn to swim.
Fuck retro anything.
Fuck your tattoos.
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory.
Tupac shakur died September 13 1996
Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade because I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.
after a media hype east coast, west coast beef, where there was also at the time the expectation of B.I.G. passing as well
Come down.
Get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.
So, the song is not about christ but rather an attemp of a resented mind rooting to see the fall of what he considers the next fool martyr.
B.I.G. pass away march 9, 1997.
wanna know what the song eleven is about? -
Lead singer Maynard Keenan has said that this is about the tendencies of people to stand on a soap box and sacrifice themselves in some way. He believes you should make your own decisions.
-
The song is skeptical of the divinity of Jesus Christ this is obvious. But at the same time... the we're going to miss him part to me "we" is the band yes... but it also the world. I think that that line can either be sincere for Hicks.... or sarcastic for the fake matyrs that this song may indeed reference. Standing above the crowd.... well imo this couldn't be referencing Jesus because he was hanging above the crowd. Of course Maynard and the band would notice details like that. I think this is pointing to the people that brainwash people. Part of this song may be about Bill Hicks... but all in all I think its sarcastic tone and lyrics represent a mockery of the matyrs who "had alot of nothing to say".
By the way I am a Christian and I love this song.. it's not just about lyrics. -
To me, Tool can be interpreted differently depending on who is listening to the song, and what situation he/she is in. What I find interesting about Tool lyrics, as opposed to most other bands, is that their lyrics can be very easily adapted to many personal situations as long as you steer clear of trying to find the 'truth' in their words.
Thank them for being able to stay vague yet relate most of the lyrics in a song to a single message that can be variable-- not an easy accomplishment.
If in fact Tool is trying to convey a specific message through their songs that should not be interpreted in more than one way, then I guess I'm just not on the same wavelength. Regardless, they serve a good purpose in my life. -

Just incase you had your definition wrong. I believe tool is using # 3 "felt or enjoyed through imagined participation in the experience of others: a vicarious thrill."
LOL. no it's about how people live life through an intermediary. Such as experiencing death and destruction vicariously through your TV; and how we are all fixated on it. Think about all the death and destruction we watch in video media.
LOL out of all the songs tool has written. Vicarious is like the most obvious, least left to interpretation, song written. Sorry to light you up dude, but I'm reading through all this senseless babbling in this thread, and I just had to make a post as clear as I could.
