This first stanza could mean that he is contemplating suicide because his loved one died, and took part of his soul with her.
The Hearse Represents death
Running out of gas represents the crushing blow that Jesus gave to death on the cross.
The three people in the front seat of the taxicab represent the trinity, and that the man in the song is being saved from death and his sins are forgiven. -
