30 Seconds To Mars: From Yesterday Meaning
Song Released: 2006
From Yesterday Lyrics
And a vision to none
He can never get enough,
Get enough of the one
For a fortune he'd quit
But it's hard to admit
How it ends and begins
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)
On his face is a...

I would agree with the previous posts regarding a man whose face shows and tells a story, presumably a conflicted, weathered and stressed man. A man who can't escape his past, and a man who might be afraid of what is to come. In analyzing this song and comparing it to Leto's other songs, I would probably disregard the political predictions but I may just be wishing that for myself. Excellent song!

If you look to artists and songs to be your hero and to make you into a person than you're an idiot...besides that. do you honestly think this song is about a man getting a tattoo of the world on his face? that's retarded why would anyone do that or write a song about it? and why would he get a tattoo that he couldnt read, even more retarded. most songs meanings are not derived from their literal lyrical interpretations, learn something about music.

Firstly I would like to thank my hero Jared Leto for this song. He made me the man I am today with this song. Thanx Jared
On his face is a map of the world:
It seems to me that this lyric is a direct reference to the beautiful tattoo artwork of a map of the world on his face.
But he doesn't want to read the message here:
This line is very deep. This man who obviously has a reading inability, does not want to read the message because he can't. He is torn between ringing back and asking them to read him the message, or learning to read.
He'll decide when he's done with the innocent:
This saddens me deeply. Thumbs down Jared, thumbs down.
From yesterday, the fear:
This seems to me that he is constantly living in the past, and afraid of the endless amount of messages that await him. -
I think the song is about a soldier or mercenary. He has done terrible things for money, and he is living in denial about them and doesn't "want to read the message". He is older now and the time and horrors he has committed have aged him, making his face wrinkled and aged, like "a map of the world"

I got my money on group leaders, on his face is the map of the world could mean the pressure of many on one. from yesterday could mean the trials and tribulations of the people before him. from yesterday the fear... perhaps the repercussions of actions done in the past. On a mountain he sits not of gold but of shit... To others he could be sitting in a great position as a group leader but with all the problems that he has to deal with, to him it's all shit. The movie might have some reason for this, considering China had many group leaders over all. once again maybe I'm wrong, this is just a shot at it.

To the person who wrote that big long speech about the tattoo on the face thing, nice theory but what?! you're not meant to take the "on his face is a map of the world" literally!
I'm not sure what it means but I seem to remember hearing somewhere that it was about a criminal?? like a murderer maybe hmm... I dunno -
Well all of you are pretty much right, politics, people in general, the tattoo thing was interesting too. All this opened my mind to the idea that some people spend there whole life putting on the tattoo of the world, they act a certain way, do what there told, say what is accepted, and in the end realize that it pretty much is all a tattoo and they are not themselves anymore.
When they realize it they can't even bare to face themselves and look in the mirror because all of it is just from yesterday and they never lived for themselves today in the now. So they want to be themself more than ever but they have the world on there face and it can't be shaken till they take a journey and find themself and understand their beliefs. Just what I got from it. Thanks for the insight y'all. -
This song means that he is afraid of his past and he wants to forget it even though there may be a lesson there he just wants to forget it. He is ashamed of something he did. He did something that made him frowned upon. everything seems so complicated to him. It seems like he hurt an innocent person.

I agree with the people above me when they say it's about someone trying to run from his past and 'Map of the world' is saying you can see what he has done. You know like when they say you an see it in your eyes. Well tats what I think it means. The 'Yesterday the fear' Is him regretting what he has done and the 'Not reading the message' is him struggling to come to terms with what he has done and he wants to pretend it hadn't.
Whoever put the thing about the tattoo up. Is a GENIUS! It made me laugh so much. Good magination -
Wow it still amazes me how stupid some people can be.... It's stupid and ignorant people for the most part that cause so many problems in this world. That and people who can't respect other people religious beliefs... Yeah I agree def. political.
