30 Seconds To Mars: Was It a Dream Meaning
Was It a Dream Lyrics
Your walls built deep inside
Yeah I'm a selfish bastard
But at least I'm not alone
My intentions never change
What I wanted stays the same
And I know what I should do
it's time to set myself on fire
Was it a...

#1 top rated interpretation:I think that the song is basically about someone who is completely estranged from their former love. And it just seems so hard to believe that they were together, now that he thinks back, and the only thing he can have to prove that it happened was a "photograph of you and I...In love...".
-
Personally I believe this song to be about maybe a death or suicide of a loved one or friend. 'Your reflection I wouldn't waste, like a thousand burned out yesterdays' Sort of like saying that he misses them and wishes they were still with him. Jared has also said that none of their songs are about relationships, so I don't really think it has anything to do with a past relationship. Also when he sings 'Believe me when I say goodbye, forever is for good' it could be him saying goodbye to the person who has died.
I'm not entirely sure, but this is what it sort of means to me. -
The thing is, Jared said he would never write about songs about some girl or something along those lines. So not sure any of those assumptions are right.
-
This song, in my opinion, is not about a liking of a certain girl, but probably a broken relationship.
Because he had broken up with someone, or his love has died, it seems to him as if it was all a dream, and the only evidence of them being together and in love is a photograph. Personally, I get the image of someone sitting on his bed and staring at a photo and imagining all that has happened between them, going deep into his memories. Maybe it was his fault, as he calls himself a "selfish bastard".
It is all about lost memories, almost nostalgic ones. Nevertheless, love this song <3 :) -
WTF people listen to the song again, in the end he does say "in love"
-
To me this song is about someone liking another person but this person is too afraid to let someone in.
"Your defences were on high, your walls built deep inside".
This person knows that but still wants her.
"My intentions never change, what I want still stays the same"
But then this person turns her back on him & pretends she didn't know him at all. And he tries to figure out what went wrong but all he has is that photograph.
"Was it a dream? Was it a dream?, Is this the only evidence that proves it, A photograph of you and I"
So he tries to block her out just like what she did to him but can't stop thinking about her.
"Your reflection I've erased, like a thousand burned out yesterdays"
The IN LOVE part can be heard at the end of the acoustic version of the song which also sounds fabulous -
i totally agree! Where did you get 'in love' from? If i CAN read, then i read that it said 'a photograph of you and i'. This proves that it can't be about his old life. I think that it is about a past love who was too good for him and he still can't believe that she dated him.

I think that maybe he's talking about the break up of a girl. He's proving that he's not alone because he has his 'other half' (his conscience).
Now he's erased her from his mind and he's moved on, started all over again on a different path. -
