Aerosmith: Hole In My Soul Meaning

Album cover for Hole In My Soul album cover

Song Released: 1997

Hole In My Soul Lyrics

I'm down a one way street
With a one night stand
With a one track mind
Out in no man's land
The punishment sometimes
Don't seem to fit the crime

Yeah there's a hole in my soul
But one thing I've learned
For every love letter...

I think its about a guy who has cheated on his 'more sexually experianced' girlfriend. He made a mistake while they were together now she is leaving him. He made a mistake by cheating on him, however, she has had loads more sexual experiences in the past and was a bit of a ho. So he's is basically saying, due to his own issues, he had a moment of weakness and had a one night stand, which he regrets. She is angry and in the process of breaking up with him and he feels like the punishment doesnt fit the crime, considering her expanded sexual past and his lack thereof.

There’s a hole in my Soul, and it will keep on killing me forever

The song “There’s a hole in my Soul” by Aerosmith, shows the feelings of a man who, emotionally, has been stabbed at his back by his true love. However, Stephen Tyler makes an awesome job by using specific metaphors to communicate the feelings in a deeper way; he’s not being lazy as other artists who will easily say they feel sad. He uses a refrain which says “There's a Hole in My Soul, that’s been killing me forever, it’s a place where a garden never grows”. He also demonstrates his great ability at using metaphors as he also respectfully directs to his girl as selfish and traitor, “take a walk outside your mind”. Even though at the beginning Stephen Tylor shows he is really angry, he says he hates her and that he can’t believe his love turned a knife inside him, at the end, he demonstrates that although all the horrible things she did to him, he still loves her, “she is still in my head”.
I also wanted to point out that in other versions of the song; the singer adds some words after the part in which he says “now I sleep with my boots on” in another version he says “I fu…. With my boots on and you fu…. With my head” this makes it even more emotionally active.
