Alanis Morissette: Thank U Meaning
Song Released: 1998
Thank U Lyrics
-
1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:This song is about her journey into Enlightnement. Getting past all the negative emotions...terror, frailty, dillusionment, elusive praise (kudo's) and the fear of death... and finding the "clarity" and "silence" that comes through meditation (Thank you India) that allows one to fully appreciate the here and now (how 'bout me enjoying the moment for once), which leads to finding the Divine Love we all have inside of us (How 'bout remembering your Divinity) and being overwhelmed by its beauty (How 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out) and finally seeing life (Thank You Providence) in a way you never imagined before (as in the "All seeing eye of Providence"... on the back of a ONE dollar bill!).
The BIG clue is in the "Bridge" of the song,
"The moment I let go of it" (negative emotions) "Was the moment I got more than I could handle" (Enlightenment, and the overwhelming experience that comes with it) "The moment I jumped off of it" (A leap of faith) "Was the moment I touched down." (Finding her True self). She draws special attention to this passage in her video as well because she stops signing the words.
She wrote this song because everyone that has expereinced this (Enlightenment) wants to share it with others so that they will find their own path to Enlightenment, too. -
Not sure if "Thank U" is really a "Thank U." In India, where Alanis spent some time, thanking someone is a grave insult. The "Thank U" could mean "F*** U?" Wadda you think? Food for thought...just a factoid about her life experience that you should know and consider NOT my take on the song, just a MAYBE hmmmm, what WAS she thinking...

I won't try to interpret. I think it would be a condescension to try. Only Alanis really knows the meaning. One would have to have been her to get it. Pretty sure that was the point. We all walk a path that nobody can understand without being that person. She is SO DROP-DEAD gorgeous doing it! Alanis spews self confidence while she sings. That's what makes her great.

Although I agree with the interpretation above, I had to offer some possible amendments. As I am on the journey myself, I realize the different issues each individual might face but "Negative" emotions may not cover it. Even though it can be confused or create a negative-like emotion, some of what Alanis is refering to is ego. Ego can hold you down or create false confidence. I believe "The moment I let go of it..." may refer to ego. It's typically the last and hardest thing to get past but once one is able, the flood gates open.
It's my sincere hope that this is supplemental and not inflammatory. Ego is so easily forgotten and I am certain that Alanis, herself would have included it if asked to comment. Thanks for the opportunity to participate. -
Hi Vishy,So glad you like the song, too! I've heard of Demi but haven't listened to her songs rfboee. I was actually browsing through some Depeche Mode songs on Youtube and I saw her name it sounded familiar and I clicked on it. The rest is, as they say, history.
