Alanis Morissette: Uninvited Meaning
Uninvited Lyrics
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Must be strangely exciting
To...

#1 top rated interpretation:This song is about Pizza. She really wants to eat lots of pizza but she doesn't want to get really fat. So she is metaphorically speaking telling the pizza to stay away...even though she's really into pizza.

#2 top rated interpretation:I see a tendency to read too much into the meaning, it's as simple as not being interested in a relationship or being closed off for some reason or probably just a loner, but this person comes into her life and much to her surprise is actually making her feel a certain way, and now she has to deliberate whether to step out of her comfort zone and take things further with this "uninvited" person, the rest is up to the listener to imagine by putting themselves in that situation, it's brilliant songwriting, and singing. One of my favorites EVER.

#3 top rated interpretation:Love can sneak up on you sometimes. You can be just living and experiencing the world intentionally or unintentionally cut off from romance. And then without warning... boom. There's this intense, scary connection you weren't looking for, that you totally weren't expecting. And it's intoxicating, and terrifying, and undeniable.
You might want to run, or stay back, or hold this person at arms length. Not because they don't excite you, not because you don't feel pulled, not because you don't already know that you Want to Love them. But because you need a minute to figure out how exposed you're willing to be. Just a breath to take it all in.
In the end.. usually holding back gives way to passion and you are washed away in it for better or for worse. -Bear -
Alanis usually dedicates this song to the fans. She's been doing this for a while now. So, one day it clicked: the song IS about the fans! The fans and their relation with her, the idealization, the deep analyses people do about her and her lyrics. How intriguing she must seem, and her understanding about this. But, mostly, the song talks about the limit she imposed in this relation since the Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie era.

For me this song interprets like Alanis was already in some form of relationship and some other person/s came into her life which she was flattered by and kind of liked the extra attention but knew she couldn't do anything about it because she was already taken. Maybe she was having a few problems in the relationship that's why her head was turned with the attention which would be this part of the song:- Like anyone would be
I am flattered by your fascination with me
Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
The guy / girl obviously tried to say you're not happy where you are maybe you'll be happier elsewhere hence the lyrics :- Like any uncharted territory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine before
The person obviously tried it on with her hence you're not allowed you're uninvited an unfortunate slight -

Like any hot-blooded woman
I have simply wanted an object to crave
But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Must be strangely exciting
To watch the stoic squirm
Must be somewhat heartening
To watch shepherd need shepherd
But you, you're not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
Like any uncharted territory
I must seem greatly intriguing
You speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine before
But this is not allowed
You're uninvited
An unfortunate slight
I don't think you unworthy
I need a moment to deliberate -
I believe Alanis reached into her past for these lyrics, remembering her "taboo" relationship with Dave Coulier. She knew that society wouldn't accept their relationship, but her passion for him existed nonetheless. He was "uninvited" to her love and body, but she wanted him desperately, and , after deliberating, began a passionate affair with him.

This song is a hymn of a dead person, singing from the other side and not having the possibility to get into the world of those alive from the world of the dead. This is reflected in the sharp dissonance of the vocal line relative to the instrumental. This dissonance demonstrates that the singer is in a different reality and can't hear the reality of the living people where the instrumental part is performed, different scale and rhythm. This is like the song sung from the otherworld by someone who is desperately trying to get into the musical harmony of the living people, but does not always succeed. This is a story of a girl who has died from unhappy life who is trying to tell us something from the other side/world of the dead/.

Uninvited fans who feel the privilege or right to impede their interpretations of who she is directly onto her.
About a female musician in the 90s, Hyper sexualized to sell albums being objectified by society.
Fans watching her videos/listened to her albums/watched her in TV and read about her in magazines and feeling justified to have a say in her decisions in what to do and sing about. -

The "friendly stalker" rationale makes the most sense to me. An older, "friendly stalker" who is trying to replace a former love interest with her.

The song is about being sexually assaulted, or date raped. I'm old enough to remember her explaining the lyrics behind the song on MTV.
