Amy Winehouse: Between the Cheats Meaning
Between the Cheats Lyrics
I'd take a thousand thumps for my love
'Cause you kissed a lucky horseshoe
Stuck it in my boxing glove
Cause anyone who has seen us
Through our victories and dumb defeats
Knows that I'll take you to the...
-
'I would die before I divorce ya
I'd take a thousand thumps
For my love'
- Nothing could ever get in-between the love that she has for her husband. The thought of not being with him is so unbearable she would rather die. She is willing to go through a lot of pain to stay in this relationship.
'Cause ya
Kiss a lucky horseshoe
Stuck it in my boxing glove'
- He is her lucky charm and the diving force behind her pain.
'Cause anyone
Who will see us
Through our victory
And dumb defeat
Knows that I'll take you to the cleaners
If you come between the cheats'
- People who know this couple and have seen their good times and bad realise that cheating could never break them apart because their love outweighs the hurt of infidelity. She will simply wash away his sins and carry on.
She speaks of him like a chair with spilled juice on it, take it to the cleaners and it is as though it had never happened - the chair is not ruined.
'My husband is
The fine handsome hustler
And he still make
This housewife blush'
- She is still sexually aroused by him after many years together. She see's him as the dream man and the fire that burns between them is exciting and passionate. Blushing is brought on by adrenaline, he still gives her a rush.
'So I'm lockin'
My hand in his
I'm sitting on
The royal flush'
-She's protective of him, holding onto him. The royal flush is a poker reference, it is the luckiest and rarest hand in poker (A,K,Q,J,10 of the same suit). He signifies this, being the most powerful, strongest, rarest and luckiest person she can hold onto. She can't believe her luck and having him as a husband feels powerful.
'Women drink him in
Swimming in his green eyes'
- He's gorgeous and mesmerising, other women want to take him eagerly, consume him, taste him and be filled up by his presence. They unconsciously want to submerge themselves in his gaze, it is easy and a luxury to look at him. Green is a rare colour in eyes and also a lucky colour in general.
'Cause we all have to lock eyes
And I know as my heart beats
There's a winning secret to both
And it's sworn
Between the cheats...
- She will always have to see the women he has slept with, she will always have to continue seeing him, she knows the secret to continuing this marriage is by accepting him and even supporting him for who he is, to her that is true love and how the marriage will work. she doesn't expect other people to understand because it's something sworn between them as husband and wife, this is no one else's business. It's not conventional but it works for them, and as she said, she would rather die than not be with him. This treaty between them only brings them closer, there wouldn't be such hurt and passion and chasing and desperation for him if he didn't cheat. He would most likely not find another woman who would allow him to behave this way and still love him unconditionally. There is a unique bond here that can only be sworn 'between the cheats'.

I personally love this song and Amy for that case. I can relate because I am young and married. I think Amy is using "Between the Cheats" as an acronym for "between the vowels" the whole song is talking about marriage and one verse says, "It's sworen between the cheats". Basically she's saying, its his and hers marriage what they do is this their business but no one better not come "between the cheats" (vowels).

"I would die before I divorce ya,
I'd take a thousand thumps for my love
'Cause you kissed a lucky horseshoe
Stuck it in my boxing glove"
She loves him so much that she can't imagine being without him
She'll accept a beating as long as she gets to stay with him
Horseshoes are already lucky things, so she's saying he's her good luck charm that gives her will to fight
"Cause anyone who has seen us
Through our victories and dumb defeats
Knows that I'll take you to the cleaners
If you come between the cheats"
People have seen them together in good times and bad, taking someone to the cleaners means taking all their money, or you could say she'll take everything of yours if you try and break them up.
"Between the cheats
Between the cheats
Between the cheats
My husband is the finest handsome hustler
And he still makes this housewife blush
So I'm throwing my hand in his
I'm sitting on the royal flush"
Talking about what she loves about Blake
And she still loves him
She will give him everything she has to him
"Women drink him in, swimming in his green eyes
Then go home and cash the chips you've got
And here maybe two, oh two bottles of
The jack of hearts is my jackpot"
Women love him and he knows it very well
They go home with their winnings and celebrate
"Between the cheats
Between the cheats
Between the cheats
Cause we all have to lock eyes
And all I know is my heart beat
There's a winning secret to both
And it's sworn between the cheats"
All they have to do is look at each other
All she knows is what she feels in her heart
She knows the secret to love and it's what they have.
Between the cheats
Between the cheats
Between the cheats
