Amy Winehouse: Tears Dry on Their Own Meaning
Song Released: 2007
Tears Dry on Their Own Lyrics
Is a darkness that we knew,
And this regret I had to get accustomed to,
Once it was so right,
When we were at our high,
Waiting for you in the hotel at night,
I knew I hadn't met my match,
But every moment...

If youve ever listened to the original track,i think it helps you feel the emotion more and the sadness of this song.
To me, she is singing about a hopeless love story that was once a bit of fun - hence sneaking around hotels - but she soon looses control of the affair when her feeling get involved and it turns bleak for her.
In the first few lines i think she's saying that all she is to this man is sex at night in hotels - and when she realises that that's all she will ever be, she forces herself to get accustomed to it as its the only way she can still be involved with him and starts regretting the routine they've created that she at first thought would be fun and sexy. "all i could ever be to you - is the darkness that we knew - and this regret i got accustomed to"
Then she goes on to saying how she got attached but on her own fault - suggesting it was never meant to be a relationship and prehpas he was actually in one explaining why he had to walk awawy. "i'll be some next mans other woman soon"
"your shadow covers me" - he has a life and a relationship so is able to go on as normal, meanwhile leaving her in the dark with just her memory of him covering her. I imagine it like his walking out the hotel room and as he leaves, he throws his jacket and it falls over her- covering her in him while hes out of the door.
"the sky above ablaze but only lovers see" - back to how there 'relationship' was always in darkness meaning they wasn't true lovers as they never got to see the sky ablaze.
-
watching her 2007 glasto performance she says that this song is about loving someone who doesnt love you back or when you know the romance has gone bad and it has to end
-
And in your "wake" meaning funeral home..in your "blue shade" meaning turning the death blue color ajust sayin..s in you're dead to her. just sayin.

No!!! She was in love with someone else's man that she was sneaking around with which is why she saysI don't know why I got so attached. She did not meant to but at the end of the day she felt as if she couldn't walk away. When he left her she felt as though the sun went down so every day was over and she has no hope. She does not talk about drying her own tears she says her tears dry on their own which for me paints an image of mascara running down her face and having dried streaks. The next trach is also wake up alone where she is laying in bed imagining that he is there with her and she wakes up to her lonely reality

This is basically a "fuck you" song. she's saying that she doesn't need a guy around to comfort her, especially not one who hurt her in the first place.
R.I.P. Amy Winehouse!
