I think the "Oh, it's not that you should care." means I understand if you've lost patience and don't want to be part of this but "I just wanted you to know." -
I think it's a love song. Yes, they argue and they have their ups and downs but he still loves her and it's a great/big thing for him and he wants her to know it. :)
