I beleive that the song is about a person that was charged with being a witch during the witch hunt era. And that they want to give their chance to defend themselves but they were never given the chance. At the start of the song it says that just because they never sang in church that the town thought he/she was a witch. And he/she was dragged through the town towards the gallows and was hung.
