Firefly Lyrics

You my friend
You're a lot like them
But I caught your lie
And you know I did
Now I'm lost in you
Like I always do
And I'd die to win
'Cause I'm born to lose

Firefly
Could you shine your light
Now I know your ways
'Cause they're just...

I think the song is about someone this person looks up too. Almost like a father figure or some type of idol. They try and be just like this person but later find out that this person isnt a good person at all. This person is a backstabber who betrayed the people he should hold close. After finding out this information about his idol with a heavy heart he cuts him off but not after being pissed off that he became just like this person. He later decides to stop being angry at the situation and just let it roll off his shoulders and just laugh about it.

    A girl using him for whatever reason and it's hard for him to try to stay away from her when she uses her beauty to take advantage of him. And what's a guy to do when someone hot is saying they want to be with you;
"It's so hard to try when you're open wide"

"Bring me your enemies.lay them before me and walk away."
He still wants to protect her even if he knows he's being used because he loves her.

"And I don't know why so I choke and smile." This is referring to when she decided to walk out on him after everything he did for her. He has to laugh it off basically and smile around other people and her so no one sees how weak she really did make him.

Everyone is free to interpret the song however it fits into their life. Only the writer really knows what it means to them. But to me, it actually reminds me of Peter Pan a little. Lol. Idk... these lines make me think that;"Take my hand
    We'll be off and then
    We'll come back again
To a different land" but the rest of the song doesn't.

This is one of my favorites!

He loved and wanted to protect a girl. She seemed like the rest of the girls he dated but "you're a lot like them but I caught your lie and you know I did" means when he got to know more than the surface of her... She was more like him than the rest of the people. He refers to her as "Firefly" and "won't you shine your light" meaning she's a good person and maybe someone who seems to know the answers and how to help him with some of his own problems... like he's asking for advice. "Now I'm lost in you like I always do" He probably has it bad for her and he's addicted to her love. "Fu#k you firefly" is when she leaves him. She was his firefly in a jar who shined only for him... but the thing is, she caught the attention of someone else. "And I dont know why. So I choke and smile. Smile!" She's decided to stay with the other guy, and it's hurting him. He doesn't get it and feels like she's making a mistake. "You can go away if you can guess the name of the one you can't replace" He feels like he would have been good for her. It's like him saying you'll never be able to replace me. He's also being mysterious in this line... I get the feeling even though they were together, she didn't know who he really was. Like superman or Batman when they live their normal lives and no one knows who they really are. So she didn't know he was famous? Grasping at straws here. So he really loved her and she at the time really loved him and he wants that back. She didn't know he had money and was famous or his real name. He probably felt its hard to find someone who loves you for you and not all the fame and money you have. This is what I always thought about the song. A relationship that fell apart and he's angry that she gave up on him. Simple.

Unfortunately I am living the hell he has been through in addiction and this one clicked with me straight away as it was around the same time progressed with meth to more pure form crystal. From injecting to smoking the glass.

You my friend (pipe) , you're a lot like them (needles)

When the pipe started to get used it was a surprise that it was more addictive than the needle but considered more socially 'acceptable'.

'But I caught you lie, and you know I did, now I'm lost in you, like I always do.'

pipe didn't seem as bad as needle hence the 'lie' and the drug/pipe knows he did which has now got more of a hold on him which is why he is 'lost' in it like he always does (did with the needles)

Firefly represents the light from the lighter needed to smoke the pipe so any reference to flame, light.

'now i'm justified'as it doesn't feel like you are being as bad not injecting so ends up being worse. Use a lot more, more often.

'Take my hand etc. coming back to a 'different land' as its a different high and addiction as you are just as addicted to the pipe as you are to the drug. Unlike needles throwing them out the pipe becomes like an extension of yourself because in the end that's all you are left with. 'now I like it this way, you can go away (needles) If you can guess the name you can not replace (pipe, it would be the only thing that has been stronger than injecting for this drug anyway.

enemies and walking away I reckon he is still referring to needles as pipes enemies as thats its competition. You will know that he talks a lot about breathe in a lot of songs, thats inhaling the pipe.

Then last verse he is basically saying fuck you to the pipe as it wasnt meant to get worse than using needles but it did as a more pure form of the drug is required to smoke it therefore a heavier addiction.

I wish I knew about these guys back then, as his albums show his addiction getting significantly worse as did mine I may have been scared off and stopped. I think once you have passed the 3-5 year mark you are pretty much screwed for life as being on or off it you feel completely empty and numb and nothing works anymore.

I hope they come up with a cure/substitute like heroin soon as its the only drug that does permanent damage to the brain so it is literally impossible to experience feeling happy ever.

Don't touch this one, I thought was great up until the last couple of years and its been getting close to 14 years now and I'm only 30. :( If the drug doesn't kill you suicide certainly will.

This song is about someone who is being used by a "so-called" friend. This person has now betrayed their old friend, now wants revenge on him/her for being too cocky. I'm pretty sure that the old friend pushed the narrator to the side and overlooked him, and now the narrator is standing up and doing something about this whole situation.

Alright. I'm just going to make this up as I go, since I haven't really found a definition right. According to half of the other submissions, it's about someone using you and you hating them at the end. Wanna find out, step-by-step? THEN LET'S GET STARTED.

    You my friend
    You're a lot like them

Them? Who is them? They're most likely other so-called friends who used the narrator.

    But I caught your lie
    And you know I did

He found out that his so-called friend is just using him, and his friend knows it.

    Now I'm lost in you
    Like I always do

He loves his friend too much to believe it.

    And I'd die to win
    'Cause I'm born to lose

He is eager to admit the truth just this once, being used has happened too many times. He feels as if he's born to be used.

    Firefly
    Could you shine your light
    Now I know your ways

Shining lights, meaning to expose the truth. He knows about the purpose you "love him. There's no denying it now.

    'Cause they're just like mine
    Now I'm justified
    As I fall in line

He used to use people too. Now he's learned his lesson.

    And it's hard to try
    When you're open wide

It's hard to try to break up with the friend or expose them yourself because they've been so good to you (for a reason, though) and you're so addicted to them.

    Take my hand
    We'll be off and then
    We'll come back again
    To a different land

I'm pretty sure a lot of poeple would take this as a drug reference..but..really, it might not be. It could mean going through a relationship with a person that's similar to a different one. He's been cheated and used before, in other words.

    Now I like this way
    You can go away

He likes the way that he is without his using friend and his so-called friend can get out of his life if he/she isn't going to bring him anything good.

    If you guess the name
    You cannot replace

"If you guess the name" is really just saying himself, then "you cannot replace." So, you cannot replace him, he's such a unique person, no one can be him.

    Bring me your enemies
    Lay them before me
    And walk away
    Walk away
    Walk away

He's basically saying that he'd do anything for this person, but they walked away from him and used him.

    Fuck you firefly

    This statement is pretty self-explanatory..

    So you lost my friend
    Such a sorry end

I don't know if this is the correct wording, or if it makes any sense, but his "friend" lost lost himself to the narrator. To make this simpler, the so-called friend did things to make himself/herself not the narrator's friend anymore.

    And I don't know why
    So I joke and smile
    Smile!

He doesn't know why anyone would do such a thing to him, use him, so he pretends everything is fine.

    Final summation:
The narrator has an acquaintance who used to be his friend. He dumped him/her because he/she wasn't being the best they could, they used him, cheated him, etc.

Sorry for the errors and thanks for reading!

This song is about alcohol or drugs. He finds out that drugs or alcohol was the way to solve his problems "his Friend". since when he drinks he feels better. "Now I'm lost in you , like I always do ." It seems he cant stop drinking / drugs everyday and it appears that it was a fake Friend since he says and id die to win cuz I'm born to lose. he sees no hope in that Firefly's light. since it Lost its LIGHT. now he cant abandon. when he says SO u LOST MY friend... and i don't know why so i joke and smile. it Means that he's sober again.THE MID OF THE SONG IS ABOUT HOw GOOD is LIFE IS when he IS UNDER ALCOHOL OR DRUG EFFECTS <---- i agree with this but the whole joke and smile is most likely about him trying to hide the fact that he has a problem from his friends, family, and/or himself

i think its alot deeper than just a friend is trying to hurt him. I think he's saying he's been alone so long because he's so different than everyone else. like a tortured soul. then he finally finds someone who is just like him. But being the two are so similar the relationship was sort of doomed to fail eventually.

I think this song is about a drug addiction and how the kindest, sweetest person can get caught into an addiction, and then the devastating effects on personality and responsibility, just to get hands on more drugs.

i think its about a girl who's toying with this guy's emotions, until he gets her good in the end. the firefly part probably relates to a species of firefly that uses other species' flashes, so they can eat them when they try to mate with it.

My take on this is the singer finds someone he loves, someone just like him and uses that person to trust and guide him. He promises them love and devotion and prtoection. He takes her away from her evil past and guides her to a new place for a new found freedom. But as fate will have it, she fades out and leaves him. He just laughs it off and sees her leaving him as a big mistake.
