Breaking Benjamin: Polyamorous Meaning
Song Released: 2002
Polyamorous Lyrics
The day has come to an end
The sun is over my head
My polyamorous friend
he got me in a mess of trouble again
[Chorus:]
So
Just when you think that you're all right
I'm calling out from the inside
I never heard anyone
I never...

#1 top rated interpretation:Actually guys I honestly think this song isn't about sex. It could be about drugs or drinking but I doubt it. "Polyamorus" many or multiple. It is for this reason that I think that the meaning is multiple personalities.
"Let's GO!!!"
Is refering to Ben's original personality getting taken over by Ben's second(I'll refer to it as his Polyamorus side)personality.
"The day has come to an end
The sun is over my head"
This is Ben's original personality talking. Ben is basically saying the day has been good.
"My Polyamorus friend
You got me in a mess of trouble again"
Originally, Ben's original personality is good, outgoing, friendly eccetra. While the Polyamorus side is confrontational, angry a bad personality and has gotten Ben into some trouble.
"So..
Just when you think that you're alright
I'm crawling out from the inside"
This is the Polyamorus side talking. Just when Ben thinks he has control, the Polyamorus side comes back.
"I never hurt anyone
I never listen at all"
The Polyamorus side is saying he should be in control. It is delusuional though, by saying it never hurts anyone when really it never listens and takes control anyway. Hurting people.
"The day has come to an end
This cloud is over my head"
The cloud, I think, says that Ben had a bad day. At the same time, I think it also says Ben's family and friends planned an intervention to give him treatment for his multiple personality syndrome
"My Polyamorus friend
You got me in a mess of trouble again"
Once again, Ben's original "side" is talking about the pesky Polyamorus side.
"So..
Just when you think that you're alright
I'm crawling out from the inside
I never hurt anyone
I never listen at all"
Described above ^.^
"Just stay away from the White Light
I'll tell you what side is your best side!
I never hurt anyone
I never listen at all"
White light I think is refering to the intervention. Stay away, the Polyamorous side says. Also, the Polyamorous side says he will convice the original Ben which side is the correct Ben.
"Well how do you know?" (x4)
I think the line, and the reason is repeated is because Ben's orignal side is asking himself if he truely knows which side is his "best side." Simultaniously, the Polyamorous side is asking Ben's original side if he knows who he really is.
(Chorus explained above)
"Let's GO!!!!"
Ben decides who he really is and boots the Polyamours side out. He is tired of the Polyamorous side always hurting the people he cares about.
In summary, I think "Polyamorous" is about finding a person's true self and it's about multiple personalities. It could also be about drugs and alcohol but I think this is the main meaning. I am fairly certain however, it is NOT about sex.
The good thing about Breaking Benjamin songs is that they are always multiple meaninged. So I could be wrong. An awesome song. -

#2 top rated interpretation:I think this song is maybe about an alter-ego. I know polyamorous has to do with the act of having more than one open relationship. So, I think maybe his alter-ego or maybe the different side of him is polyamorous, and causes him to get in some trouble, maybe with his girlfriend or something. Maybe he's cheated because he couldn't resist, feeling as though his "polyamorous" self got him into trouble.
It says, "I'm crawling out from the inside." Which makes me think of an alter-ego, other half kind of thing. Just my interpretation.
His "polyamorous friend" could possible be his "area" since, no offense boys, but men do think with their other head. His little "friend" might be crawling out from the inside... of his jeans.
I'll leave you with that. Enjoy! -

#3 top rated interpretation:I believe that all of Breaking Benjamin's music is very spiritual. Not Christian rock but the acknowledgement of a soul, good, evil, and recognizing that sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. Sometimes the evil can appear to be good and sometimes the good can appear to be evil. By the definition of "Polyamorous" it suggests his knowing and willing personal relationship with higher beings both good and evil. All three involved, including himself, are all aware of the others existence, making it a Polyamorous relationship.
-
I thought I read somewhere the song was about breaking up with a girl that he loved so much, he wished she was polyamorous so he could still be with her. In the end he knows it would be superficial as she would never again be truly his.

Why always alcohol and drugs?..
Well, how do you know you never hurt anyone?
My polyamorous friend
She got me in a mess of trouble again

I'm getting out of a 7 year relationship where she wants to practice polyamoury. We tried to make it work for over a year. While Polyamoury does lay down a framework of terms and understanding, it's still lends itself to cheating. This is no different than Monogamy, in the respect that we take care of those we love and we have certain boundaries. If we cross those boundaries we can hurt the ones we love.
Getting to the point of this song (in my mind), I laughed when someone described his "polyamorous friend" as his penis. But I now see this song as written that way as fact. His penis (labido) is driving him to make bad decisions, which he later regrets. Desire and compulsion are taking over. As he finds a cloud coming over him again, he's creating a symbol which identifies that problems with his partner(s) have occurred because of his actions and he'll have to face the storm that he's created. (This website quoted the lyrics incorrectly as "I never heard anyone".) His interpretation that he's not "hurt anyone" is incorrect. While physical abuse may not have occurred, emotional abuse has taken place.
Should he be practicing Ethical Non-Monogamy his framework would have allowed him and his partners to have relationship fidelity and reduce these negative hurtful feelings. We can't stop being human, but we can feel love and allow others to feel love as well. We don't need to own or control others, but as for me personally, I still desire the reduced complexities of not involving multiple romantic partners.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, the chorus is definitely an interpretation of someone's dick talking (their mindset when their horny versus their mindset when they aren't), and in this case, it is a very serious topic. The first two lines of the chorus describe how his sexual urges bubble to the surface and take over right when he thinks he's overcome them, and "I never listen at all" is pretty self explanatory, his dick doesn't listen to reason. "Just stay away from the white light" is how his lust is keeping him from metaphorical salvation, "I'd say your worst side's your best side" is the immediate thought that being horny and lustful is better than having mental clarity. The verses are said periods of mental clarity, when the deed is done and he regrets everything. Still, he can't stop himself: "They've (his sexual partners) come to get me again".

It's spiritual. Struggling with EVERY relationship, internal, external, addictions, and higher powers. Being in a band is a source of conflict and compromise too.
-
I could be way off on this, but my guess (or my own personal interpretation), is that the song is about addiction. "My polyamorous friend (i.e. alcohol, drugs) He got me in a mess of trouble again."

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

It's possible to be in love with two people at The same time when you're in a polyamorous relationship. You don't love one more than the other but feel an equal love for everyone involved. It is a crazy lifestyle like someone else commented. Not my cup of tea either.
[I never hurt anyone, I never listen at all, well How do you know, How do you know]
I think there's selfdoubt, guilt, and confusion that the guy is feeling. [The cloud is over my head]
[My polyamorous friend got me in a mess of trouble again] He might be in love with two people but maybe he's living a double life and one of the girls he's with doesn't know he's polyamorous so she calls it cheating. Maybe his family is having an intervention for him because of his actions. I really don't know.
The song is hard to decipher but it's still great. -

I watched the music video. I think the girl he likes is also dating another girl, but she also likes him. He might be polyamorous too... but finds it wrong at times. Polyamorous means to be in a relationship with multiple people. You have to be able to put aside any jealousy and have a lot of trust and honesty in those types of relationships. Love the song.

Polyamorous
Part of Speech: adj
Definition: pertaining to participation in multiple and simultaneous loving or sexual relationships
(From www.dictionary.com)
So, it is about sex. But not just that. If you looked at the lyrics, it doesn't involve that many sexual terms, other than the word "polyamorous."
"My polyamorous friend
he got me in a mess of trouble again."
It could mean that the narrator has a friend who likes to maintain multiple sexual relationships. It could be a he, or a she. The narrator could be bi/gay. Sometimes people refer to "he" as a she, although I'm not sure why. And this is getting really off-track. Anyways, his friend is polyamorous. And he got him "in a mess of trouble again." This has happened more than once, obviously. This friend could already have a deep, meaningful relationship. His/her partner found out. And that's when "I never heard anyone I never listen at all" jumps in. The narrator doesn't care what the partner says. Or, it's saying that he didn't know that his friend was already in a relationship. Maybe even both.
For me, I like to do interpret lyrics line by line. If you don't want to read ALL OF THIS, then...read the summation.
Let's go
The day has come to an end
The sun is over my head
My polyamorous friend
he got me in a mess of trouble again
"Let's go" have some polyamorous fun at night. "The day has come to an end" and the next line, it's indicating the night and a fault, guilt, blame for participating in a polyamorous activity. And...his friend (it says he, but it still could be a she. Or the narrator could be bi/gay, as I said before) forced or persuaded him to join in on...you know. The "mess of trouble" was mentioned before, along with the rest, and it will be mentioned again.
So
Just when you think that you're all right
I'm calling out from the inside
I never heard anyone
I never listen at all
I'm pretty sure that the song is about his friend being polyamorous. And his friend is stuck up, thinking he's "all right." These could be wrong lyrics, having it "Just when you think that you're alright." I'm not sure. So, his friend is stuck up. Perhaps this means that he's polyamorous because he thinks he/she thinks he can get all the ladies with his looks...or whatever. Or it means that his friend thinks he likes it, yet sex is addicting and once the narrator is asked, there's no refusal. It could be slowly killing him inside.
They've come to get me again
The cloud is over my head
My polyamorous friend
he got me in a mess of trouble again
They've come to get him again. His friend has dragged him into the same issue again. Again he is tricked.
Just stay away from the white light
I'd say your worst side's your best side
I never heard anyone
I never listen at all
I'm not really sure what a white light would represent. But his friend's worst side is his best side, he has a bad temper and I guess he forges his way to get whatever he wants. Oh. We didn't know if he was being forced or persuaded, didn't we? Now we do. His friend wants him to do this, so he forces him. Sex begins to become addicting...and now there's no refusing, as I said before.
Well how do you know? x4
Translating to "Well, how do you know this is bringing so much guilt and blame on my head, how do you know this is slowly killing me inside?"
Final summation:
A man is involved in a few forced polyamorous activities. It brings guilt and shame to him and it's slowly killing him, but the sex is addicting and he doesn't want his friend to get upset.
Sorry if there's a few mistakes. I'm too lazy to revise this submission. Also, I love the way Ben says "polyamorous." Thanks for reading! -
His friend had a lot of lovers, got found out and then ridiculed. He, being one of the lovers, curses the world in general for being so against there way, and questions how they would know anything, implying that one has to try something to know how it truly is.
He endears his polyamorous friend throughout the song, in a way which may be an implication that even if the friend gets him in trouble oh-so-many times, he will still forgive him. (and then get into the same trouble all over again)
Also is very obvious that their preferences gets them in trouble every now and then.
The only other interpretation I could get from the song video is... That he Is smokin' HOT! -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

he said in an interview with some publication that he got the idea for this song from an old MTV show called "Between the sheets" well i think it was called that. i maybe wrong but that's the round about idea behind it.
