I think that this is about a relationship that is ending. Things have changed between the two people and that has forced them apart. There was not much they could do to stay as close as they were, rather had to really give in to what was inevitable. They tried to stay in the relationship as long as they could, but at one point it just had to end. I really like the imagery used in this song and it invokes a lot of emotion for me.
