Electric Light Orchestra: Hello My Old Friend Meaning
Hello My Old Friend Lyrics
Cooling towers and factory gates
Dirty streets and laughing people
Skinny dogs and beer crates
Hello my old friend
Hello my old friend
Sad canals green black water
Somewhere bicycles and beds
Wet and windy...

A sentimental nostalgic song as ELO and Leader Jeff Lynne's origins are in Birmingham. Jeff Lynne wrote this during the secret messages album period as another tribute to his hometown.( the first was Birmingham Blues)
I think this is a final farewell song. Its hello my old friend, a sentimental tone referring to the past and him growing up there. But the difference, now is the singer is now leaving for good and i will miss you, ie bye bye the lyrics after the middle a time travel mix of sounds referring to the many changes in the city.
Jeff moved to LA, ( he loved it there still does ) and was now saying a final fond goodbye.
Takes a few listens to become likable in my opinion lots of sound going on. -
My interpretation .... Birmingham.... Shard end were he was born I'm only young but love Elo !!!!!!!
