Electric Light Orchestra: Mr. Blue Sky Meaning
Song Released: 1978
Covered By: Weezer (2019)
Mr. Blue Sky Lyrics
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin'
Everybody's in a play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day.
Runnin' down the avenue,(Pant, Pant, Pant)
See how the sun shines brightly
In the city on...

#1 top rated interpretation:If you’ve suffered from mental illness then you know straight away this song is about those rare sweet moments when your depression lifts and you just feel alive one more time. It feel so simple like you’ve cracked the code. How was it ever that bad. And even while you’re basking in the glorious light of mr blue sky, mr night has his hand on your shoulder guiding you back to darkness again. This song makes me so happy and so sad at the same time. It holds a special place in my heart.

#2 top rated interpretation:On a BBC Radio interview, Jeff Lynne talked about how he came up with this after he locked himself away in a Swiss chalet attempting to write ELO's follow-up to A New World Record. "It was dark and misty for two weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next two weeks."
I think Mr. Blue Sky is a song about having bad times for so long that you just expect them. When "Mr. Blue Sky" appears, you can tell the good times are here.
"Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why, you had to hide away For so long" is more of a question why the good times didn't get here that quickly.
Another lyric, "But soon comes Mr. Night, Creepin' over, now his Hand is on your shoulder, Never mind I'll remember you thus way." Is a reminder that the bad times will come back but you have to remember this one moment of happiness. -

#3 top rated interpretation:Idk why but i think this song really fitted in when we think about the day our son was born. Especially after we have waited for a child for so long :)
"Mr blue sky please tell us why you had to hide away for so long"
"Hey you with the pretty face welcome to the human race"
And also the realization that the real world may not be the nicest place to live in, sometimes you had bad days, sometimes some things shaped you badly. And who knows what kind of things will happen to our son. But then i will think of my son the way he is now.
"But soon comes mr night, creepin over now his hands is on your shoulder, never mind, i will remember you this way"

I feel as if the song is talking about feeling like a kid again, and the fear of growing up. "Mr. Blue sky, please tell us why you had to hide away for so long. Where did we go wrong?" He is asking why he and others had to grow up so quickly. And "Mr. Blue sky" is a Term for his innocence and purity when he was younger.

It’s a circle of life in one song! Glorious life then death. It makes me so sad to hear those lower cello notes at the end with a faint voice of mr blue sky high! So evocative.

I think it could be about nuclear winter as it mentions “where did we go wrong” which suggests a nuclear war or a human error of mass destruction and the blue sky is now there because of the chemicals in the atmosphere have vanished and by the use of “hey you with the pretty face welcome to the human race” it could suggest that people have come out of hiding and can finally breath pure air but that’s my theory
