Evanescence: Going Under Meaning
Song Released: 2003
Going Under Lyrics
Fifty thousand tears I've cried
Screaming, deceiving and bleeding for you
And you still won't hear me, going under
Don't want your hand this time, I'll save myself
Maybe I'll wake up for once
Not...

Going Under = Baptism. The video even drives that point home further.
"i died again(to be reborn), im going under, drowning you" dosent take a genious to figure out who she is singing to. i could go line by line...but this is basically a dear john letter to satan.
the album is called "Fallen" *cough*
i suppose everyone thinks that the song "taking over me" is about some guy....wrong.

i think this song is about being in a relationship bcuz shes talking about falling again... so therefore she loves this guy but hes either abusive or cheating on her and she has never done anything wrong to him and shes tired of him not noticing and shes drowning in her love for him and shes slowly losing it...

This song is about her relationship with a narcissist or borderline personality partner. Unless you have been through this type of relationship it's impossible to understand. It's one of the most traumatic experiences you could possibly witness. They lie and manipulate and change reality so much that you feel like you were in a washing machine spin cycle by the time they are done with you. blurring and stirring the truth and the lies...so I don't know what's real and what's not...always confusing the thoughts in my head. They are masters at this and you begin to feel like you are the one that's crazy. If you read about this disorder (NPD) and what they do in relationships, it will explain all of her songs, as well as Linkin Park, Tool, and many other similar bands. But to get the full effect, you must live it. Not something I wish on anyone.

In a direct quote from Amy:
"The lyrics are about coming out of a bad relationship. And when you're at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can't go on living in the situation that you're in." -
I believe this is about an abusive relationship. I also like the idea of if being about an eating disorder, though. I've been through both, and still dealing with them.

This is the ring tone on my crush's cell phone when I call or text him.
I went through a horrid divorce and I refused to let him help me because I don't trust him or any man, least of all my now ex. I stir the lies and deceived my ex all the way to divorve court and it was hell.
i broke free from him but it cost me quite a lot to always be one step ahead of him and having to break free from him with our daughter after 16 years was not easy.
i did go under many times. I went thru two hurricanes and a flood and I still refused to let this man I really care for help me. I never ask him for anything if I can help it.
I think it's about watching helplessly while someone you love struggles when you know damn well if they would "take your hand" it would make it easier on them.
Some people have to do it alone because the difficulties that are shoving you under are yours alone and only you understand the other person means to murder you emotionally. everyone else thinks that they are screaming at you because you won't listen. you only won't listen to their shit. you will listen to reason, but they are screaming their point of view which you know will only be for their good. If you listen to them, you will go under again. -
Fallenbat said "Amy said in an interview that this song was about an abusive relationship."
From the sounds of it, it's about an abusive relationship with drugs or alcohol. Addiction. -
Amy said in an interview in Australia MTV's The Lair, "Going Under" is about a previous emotionally and physically damaging relationship.
-
I would say that she's cracked. She finally thought that with all that she'd sacrificed and all that she'd been through that THIS was finally it. That she was going to get the results that she'd anticipated while going through whatever she had to, to make that happen. Whether that meant feeling for that person or sacrificed, lied, or done whatever was necessary for that person. And knowing that it didn't really make a dent in the problem...she's cracking again. Only this time she just might break.

I personally love this song so much. um its def about how this girl is in love with someone but he's taking her down and she's going under in pain and she can't really control because she still in love with him and. Its always hard to break out of a bad relationship because you still love the person yet you want to break free
-
Amy said in an interview that this song was about an abusive relationship. My thoughts are that no matter what he did, she couldn't bring herself to end things because She still loved him, but she was telling him how to make things work and he didn't care what she felt, she was just a girl that he could use.

Well when I first listen to this song I was very intrigued by the lyrics. I am also christian, so this is what I felt this song meant. The following interpretation is mine and is based because I'm very christian.
"Now I will tell you what I've done for you
50 thousand tears I've cried
Screaming Deceiving and Bleeding for you " - this part reminded me of devil. The devil will do anything to take you away from Gods hands. So if you think about what the devil does this.
"And you still won't hear me
(I’m going under)
Don't want your hand this time I'll save myself
Maybe I'll wake up for once
Not tormented daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom
I'm dying again " - now this part reminded me an ex-christian person. This person once believed in God but lost his faith. "you still won't hear me now" means that this person has been prayin and has received no answer. The rest of this part starts mentioning that he/she gives up on God and will go under and that he/she no longer wants Gods help.
"I'm going under
Drowning in you
I'm falling forever
I've got to break through
I'm going under " - this part I see it as 2 things. This part mostly made me think of the ex-christian giving up on God and falling forever. "drowning in you" made me think of the devil again. The devil would drown into your spirit and take control becuase he/she gave up on God.
"Blurring and Stirring the truth and the lies
So I don't know what's real and what's not
Always confusing the thoughts in my head
So I can't trust myself anymore
I'm dying again " - this part I interpret as the ex-christian person not knowing which way to go. This person doesn't know what truth is anymore because they have lost faith in God. It also mentions that they are going back to their old ways-"im dying again".
"So go on and scream
Scream at me I'm so far away
I won't be broken again
I've got to breathe I can't keep going under" - this part I interpret as the exchristian claiming to God, knowing he/she messed up and know that they have lost faith and that they are far away from God. "I won't be broken again" means that they have found a temporary pleasure by going under...."ive got to breathe I can't keep going under" basically means that the ex-christian knows they put themseleves in a bad place and are asking for help by mentioning they can't keep going under.
Overall when I first heard this song I felt weird because I was very christian. As I keep listening I felt weird because somehow I knew this was devil tryin to confuse through this type of lyrics.......BUT that's my interpretation...the author might have intended it for another purpose but its funny how what I just wrote fits with what she wrote in her lyrics......
