Evanescence: My Immortal Meaning

Album cover for My Immortal album cover

Song Released: 2003

My Immortal Lyrics

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is...

I know the meaning of these lyrics all to well. Well at least I think I do. I think she is talking about a mate that she is committed to, but that is never around. She gives everything she has for that person and is always around, but they are never there for her. The feelings she describes in this song is exactly how it feels. And I think that they are still together through the whole song. I don't see him actually leaving. Just her having to continue on in the emptiness of the relationship. It's an awful feeling. Trust me she or whoever the author is totally nailed it.

why do song interpretations matter??? i mean, just listen to the song, enjoy it, move on with your life. if you really want to know the actual truth behind it all, ask the artist themselves. i mean, really people? has it come to this?

I think its one of those songs were you can relate in anyway you want to, its about anyting you want it to be about!

so to me it makes me think back to when I went tru a really hard time and I was thinking about killing my self insted I just ended up leaving scars ALL over my arms.

this song always makes me cry, And i cry FREACKING HARD when it says "these wounds wont seem to heal" Oh my, I look and sound like a 2year old when I hear that.

But I think in Amys point of veiw she is thinking about her sister she lost when she was young.( in the video she is climing a tree like shes a child again)

sooooooooo yeah thats what i think about it!

It seems to be about death and despair. When I first heard it, I cried until I fell asleep. Of course, I had lost my grandma this year. It made me think of a person( lets say a woman) who just lost the man she loved in a idk a car accident. She is so angry at him because he died, but she is also devastated.(hence the "I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone"). She knows he's watching over her, yet she cannot truly believe he is still with her. Now let's take it from the male point of view: He just lost the woman he loved in the same way. He remembers protecting her and comforting her( the "When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears ect.") He hates the fact that she is gone forever and never ever coming back, yet he nw has an angel watching over him now and forever.
Of course, that's just my interpritation, we're all entitled to our opinions. :)

This song is about loss, separation and pain. I heard it in 2004, at first I liked the rock with Amy´s angelical voice. Then something happened with a girl I knew, and this song caught a new meaning. It reflected an event in my life and time has healed wounds, yah, but some memories remain, and that is not always good.
Ben Moody wrote this song for his death grand parent. But in the video you can see that it is about a lover, as Amy is like a ghost and Ben Moody is wandering around in a trance. This a great song, it is as good as "Bring me to Life," or maybe even better because of its deep meaning. We must enjoy the time that is given to us with a love ones, because like everything in life it is evanescent.
Here there is a take from Amy, herself in an interview.

"You know what? When you see the video it's really amazing. Obviously we filmed it before this [Ben Moody's departure] happened and it's amazing irony, how much it makes sense. We're all separated and wandering the streets looking like it's the day after a funeral, with Ben in a suit and bare feet, and I'm never touching the ground. I'm sitting on a phone booth or lying on a car, to hint that I'm dead, that I'm singing from the dead. It's all about separation. It's almost like the director knew what was going to happen, but he can't have known. It's just one of those fate things."

I don't know what the writer of this song had to experience to write such powerful lyrics, but I am going through a difficult relationship right now and I find comfort in being able to relate to this song.

"I'm so tired of being here, suppressed by all my childish fears"
Our relationship has reached a dead end, but because of my long-standing inability to share my true feelings, I say very little about how upset it is making me.

"And if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave"
You never make yourself available for me when I really need you, so I wish you would just move on and get out of my life completely.

"Your presence still lingers here and it won't leave me alone"
Despite that, you expect me to be there for you at all costs.

"These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase"
I've worked up the courage to tell you what bothers me and you've repeatedly told me you'll try to change, but you haven't, and I don't think you can.

"When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years"
I've always been there for you and I've made many sacrifices in the process.
"But you still have all of me"
And now I just feel used.

"You used to captivate me by your resonating light"
We used to have a strong relationship, full of communication and love.
"Now, I'm bound by the life you left behind"
I feel like you've used me to get what you wanted and now you've just spit me out.
"Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me"
And now just thinking about you, or us, gets me upset and depressed.

I think the mark of a good song is that it can easily be related to your specific situation. So whether this song is about a loveer that left abruptly, taking a piece of the author with him/her, or about a sour relationship that is dragging on for whatever reason, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that it brings comfort to those who need it.

i think it is about love and loss...but to me the song says she killed herself cos she cudnt b with the man she loved with all her heart, she ruined things with not being able to show him love that was there and with her head having so many memories of things in the past she cudnt let herself love anyone and now she has gone she is trapped and captivated with him cos there was unfinished issues..but we all listen to songs and the words dif so we all av our own meaning.

When I first heard this song I was very intrigued. I did not even know its name.
But each time I heard it, I felt as though Mary, mother of Jesus, could be singing it after the Crucifixion or even after the Resurrection. She is mourning His past life with her but knows He must leave for something better. He has "all of her" because he is her Lord. The wounds in His hands "won't seem to heal." When He was young, she would "wipe away all of your tears". Only the verse about "his deceptions" did not fit, but in a way He did not reveal Himself until the end or maybe the "he" is someone else. Yes, this song can have several meanings, but listen with Mary in mind and see if it could fit.

The song as a whole is about loss (as everybody else has already said).
Analyzing each verse, we can see the specifics:
"I'm so tired of being here, suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave
Your presence still lingers here and it won't leave me alone"
When she talks of her childish fears, it seems to me she would be talking about fear of death. The presence she means is the thoughts she still has of her loved one. She wants the memories and thoughts to go away so that she can feel better, but in this way she is not properly moving on.
"These wounds won't seem to heal, this pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase"
This loved one was very dear to her, and though it's been a long time, she still feels immense grief. She feels like time will not make it any better.
"When you cried, I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream, I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me"
This chorus makes it sound almost like the person she is grieving was very sick, that she stayed with them throughout their hardships and possibly through mental/physical breakdowns ("wipe away all of your tears/fight away all of your fears/held your hand though all of these years").
"You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now, I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me"
She is remembering, at first, the person she lost. This person was obviously very close to her, and she still feels deep love for them. But now she feels haunted by their past, that their death is somehow her fault. She sees them everywhere, hears them everywhere. She's going mad with grief.
So that's what I hear. In basic, her unidentified loved one was deathly ill. She tried to help them fight through it, and stayed with them the entire journey, but they lost the battle. She now feels that she should've done more. She wishes that their presence in her life, the hole characterized by their absence would just leave so she could have peace.
