Goo Goo Dolls: Sympathy Meaning
Song Released: 2003
Sympathy Lyrics
And this is my apology
I killed myself from the inside out
And all my fears have pushed you out
And I wished for things that I don't need
(All I wanted)
And what I chased won't set me free
(It's all I...

There's more to this song than some might realize. The addiction part is obvious, but one of the causes of the pain and addiction and driving "you" out can also be attributed to a traumatic upbringing, best described in an old VH1 doc on the GGDs. It's on YouTube if you further want to investigate. You can hear the upbringing results in other GGD songs, the latest being the new Ride All Night. Many of us had less than perfect childhoods and it's pretty brave of John to put 'em out there in front of thousands of people every gig.

I think it's forgetting about the people that you love in life during your addiction, and trying to reconcile. It says that all the things that he says he was didn't mean anything anymore. I've been there and I've thought those words.
-
During a concert John said it was about how he was taking all these drugs and having a great time, but then one day he realized he wasn't having a good time anymore and he was still taking them. And he realized he was destroying himself and everything that was good in his life and couldn't enjoy his success.
Basically it's about addiction and how it destroys you and takes away all that is good. -
I think this song is about someone going through rough times and realizes what they're doing to themselves is bad. And that they need to change but don't need sympathy.
-
Somebody is going through a tough time and doesn't feel like taking sympathy from other people. He feels really depressed and unhappy with himself.
