Goo Goo Dolls: All Eyes On Me Meaning
All Eyes On Me Lyrics
-
A transmutable song which at times you cannot understand because you are the narrator, yet other times you are the subject.
"Daylight burns your sleepy eyes and its hard to see you dreaming,
You hide inside yourself and I wonder what your thinking, and everything you're chasing, it.seems to leave you empty...
And it won't take long.to burn, all eyes on me, through the nothing that you've learned, all eyes on me, and the things you choose to be, all eyes on me....
But Your Eyes look away...its so hard to be someone strung out from today, and all that you knew slip away.
You drown in deeper oceans inventing new religions,
They smile and stab my back and I lie and have to laugh...
And it won't take long to burn, all eyes on me. Through the nothing that you've learned, all eyes on me. And the things you choose to be, all eyes on me....but your eyes look away....its so hard to be someone strung out from today. And all that you knew slip away....
And you hide in your room, and the lights burn away. You move from the Truth...its all so far from You!"
The basic, underlying theme of the song is betrayal, abandonment and the narrator taking the fall for the said things. There is also a bit of understanding or concern that the subject is depressed but the narrator's attempts to climb that wall are futile. Instead, the narrator falls every time for all the world to see. When really, she is having to brunt the blow and take responsbility for something that is beyond her. "They smile and stab my back and I lie and have to laugh" is the same as "but your eyes look away." Grreat song, btw! A redundant, thematic element perpetuated through the years. Thanks. -E-
