Jess is 100% correct. Butterfly's represent life. Ex. Larva to caterpillar, to cocoon, to Butterfly. Its representing the changes of life, and if you did actually rip the wings off a butterfly, it would be as if you are trying to evolve, and become immortal. It may not make sense to some people, but that's my interpretation.

You know I was about to type a long interpretation of this song but it seems that Jessifax26 has got the same idea I do. I just have one thing to and to her's. Ville (the lead singer of HIM for those of you who don't know) wrote this song based off of an urban legend about ripping out the wings of a butterfly.
