Dude, the "chains" were keys. and they picked them at the last minute because they said it sounded cooler than just clapping.

I think this song is about captivity
Like he's trying 2 get away and in the beginning you hear the chains with the clapping hands
And he's captured somewhere
and he wants 2 die cause he can't bear the thought of being captured "put me out of my misery"

This is song is clearly about putting so much time into something, just to see it fail. It could possibly be a reference to Chester's divorce in 2005, and how he tried to make it work, but in the end, he had to give up.
