Lovejoy: It's All Futile, It's All Pointless Meaning
It's All Futile, It's All Pointless Lyrics
Since I started university
I took a geography course to learn the datelines
And maybe use a sextant
But now I just press facsimiles
And you're exactly who you wanted to be
Well, that's what you...

I believe this song is about a man reminiscing on a relationship he had with a woman when he was younger. Although the two cared about each other a lot, the two had very different ideas about how they wanted their lives to go. The man wished to become a contributing member of society, with a partner who had that same determination and passion. The woman, however, had no big dreams for her future, and just wanted to live her life doing as little as possible, but still experiencing pleasure. The two became frustrated with each other, and decided to end their relationship. The woman began seeing another man later on in life, a successful man that didn’t expect anything of her, just as she wanted. The singer longs for the relationship that they had had, and part of him wants to go back to it. He hopes that his ex has found some sort of satisfaction in her life, but can’t help but wonder if she ever wants more.

I think this song is a follow up from the song "Sex Sells" by the same band, and now the singer is talking about his crush who is now stuck in the one sided relationship she got in for the money. The singer is struggling to make ends meet, but he feels more content than the girl who just got everything because of sex. The singer says that the girl has fallen out of love, and she is no longer interested in this guy, nor marriage or a future with him. I also interpret it as the girl cheating on that dude with the singer, from the lyrics "Anything to make me feel less numb".
