Metric: Gimme Sympathy Meaning
Gimme Sympathy Lyrics
Get too close to the flame
Wild open space
Talk like an open book
Sign me up
Got no time to take a picture
I'll remember someday
All the chances we took
We're so close to something
Better left unknown
I...
-
Perhaps I went a different way with this, but I thought the guy in the song is moving far away which will cause a breakup.
“Got no time to take a picture. I’ll remember someday, all the chances we took.” They did not take one last photo or snapshot and she’s worried she may forget their unique bond.
“Gimme sympathy after all of this is gone.” She wants people to forgive her if she has trouble grieving her loss.
“Oh seriously? You’re gonna make mistakes you know. “ She is trying to remind him nobody’s perfect their relationship might’ve been a Mistake, but it was worth the risk.
“Who’d you rather be? The Beatles or The Rolling Stones?” The Beatles are known for wholesome songs like “I Want To Hold Your Hand” “Let in Be” and “Here Comes the Sun”. The Stones are known for “Satisfaction,” “Start me Up”, “ Paint It Black” “Let’s Spend the Night Together” and other songs about the sexual aspect of love. She wants to remember him both as a friend and as a romantic. -
emily haines said herself at a Metric's Synthetica concert held at Singapore that this song:
'...this song about dreaming that you can do what you want. all along we had people telling us its not possible. [but] for us, we had been friends and a band for 10 years.'
i think this song is really up to interpretation but to me, it is about a young individual who dreams big, who chases after what she/he wants. -
I believe that this song is about a couple who are involved. I think that he is younger than her but she wants him anyway. She wants him to give her "something". The song, "Here Comes The Sun" really speaks to a better time ahead. She took a chance to love him, perhaps he was in a situation where their love was contraband. She knows it is dangerous but she is willing to take the chance. In fact, she wants to know if they want an ending like the Beatles,(bad break up) or to continue on rocking like the Rolling Stones. They are close to coming to something, but it is frightening and maybe should be left unknown. He is going back and forth on his feeling, Oh seriously? I think he does this a lot. Ultimately, give her some sympathy because she took this path and does not know how it ends.
