Drowning Lessons Lyrics

Without a sound, I took her down
And dressed in red and blue, I squeeze
Imaginary wedding gown
That you can't wear in front of me
A kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
As rice grains and roses fall at your feet
We'll say goodbye the hundredth...

It's about a relationship that's on the rocks. The couple fights all the time. He is killing her little by little and she wanted it to work out(imaginary wedding gown, engagement ring, and rice grains/roses). Breaking her heart so many times has been imprinted in his mind. He is saying it won't work out. He kills her and then himself so they can forget the heartache and end the relationship. The potential future relationship is destroyed. He doesn't regret it either("well celebrate the end of things"). He would kill a thousand men for her but he thought it would take more just to be with her. He would kill more men just to prove that he loves her. He wants to forget her without any problems(without a sound and I wish you away).

"drowning lessons" is a way to end a relationship. Most people sink, drown and die after one try. Some people endure so much that they "drown"(break up) and get back together over and over again. He compares breaking up to drowning because both should be easy but each situation is so bad they need lessons to break up.

This is a real shot in the dark, theres many people saying that its a bad relationship, which obviously thats what the lyrics are saying but maybe its more than that. I was annylising the lyrics and maybe they shouldnt be taken literally. Gerard has been battling with depression and addiction with drugs and alcohol. When he says "i dragged her down, i put her out. And back there i left her where no one could see" depressed people dont want people to know there depressed so they hide it. He is trying to kill 'her' off (depression) by hiding it from the world so no one can know. Thats hiding his depression and trying to silently kill it off without anyone knowing.

"I adore every inch of sanity" he wants himself back, he wants to be normal again, but depression and addiction is taking it away from him, hes "killing" parts of his mind off to get rid of it.

When he says "these hands stained red, for the times that ive killed you with them....(and the rest if the bridge)" this can be linked to suicide. Hes done trying to kill it off, he wants it gone but he he feels the only way that can happen is if he dies with it. Then he knows it will be gone forever.

"Without a sound and i wish you away." He wants his depression to go, without a sound. Because he doesn't want the world to see him in this vulnerable state of mind. He wants it all to go away silently sp he can finally be at peace.

This is just my interpretation but i think it makes a lot of sense

This song is about 'drowning' his sad memories of her with a drug called 'red & blue', and alcohol.

I think the verse 'Imaginary wedding gown
That you can't wear in front of me
A kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
As rice grains and roses fall at your feet
We'll say goodbye the hundredth time
And then tomorrow we'll do it again
Tomorrow we'll do it again' is about the guy imagening his girlfriend/fiance/girl he loves is marrying him because they can't be together. 'your twisted shell' refers to her only being an empty and distorted imagination and not really there any more.

'We'll say goodbye the hundredth time
And then tomorrow we'll do it again
Tomorrow we'll do it again' refers to him imagening this wedding every day and him still having to say good bye but not being able to let go.

'I dragged her down, I put her out
And back there, I left her where no one could see' refers to him burying his memory because he has to carry on, he kills her off.

But can't competly forget and here'These hands stained red
From the times that I've killed you and then
We can wash down this engagement ring
    With poison and kerosene
    We'll laugh as we die
And we'll celebrate the end of things
With cheap champagne 'he thinks of killing himself to get rid of the memory.

    'Without a sound
And I wish you away' is him saying he just wishes her memory leaves him alone but doesn't say it so he also actually want her to stay

that's what i think so anyway.....

i think you could take this song in a sense that its about drug addiction, but you could also think its about a relationship.
i think that this song is about a relationship that is on the rocks and a man who is so in love with this woman but wants to end it all because of the awful things that he has done ,he feels guilty that she loves him because he doesnt deserve any love.hes confused beause this is so hard for him to do and if he really loves her her he feels like it should be easy to let her go if it means he cant hurt her again.but in the end he ends up killing her and taking his own life because he cant end things between them but if he kills her he cant hurt her after that and he kills himself because he knows in his heart he doesnt deserve to live.

The first album is supposed to be about the death of the main characters true love then the second one is about him trying to get her back by killing a thousand evil souls, then the third is about him dealing with his own mortality.

''Without a sound I took her down,''
He's taking the dead body to the well
I'm pretty sure she dies in 'early sunsets over monroeville'

''dressed in red and blue, I squeeze
    Imaginary wedding gown
That you can't wear in front of me'
He is dressed in red and blue, he's taken the drugs from 'headfirst for halos' and he's mourning the fact she died before they got a chance to become man and wife.

''a kiss goodbye, your twisted shell...
    Tomorrow we'll do it again''
There's loads of songs about keeping the body of the one you love
    Just like 'early sunsets'
I think he like to play out a wedding with her everyday, then he gives her a kiss goodbye and the he'll come back the next day and do it over.

'i dragged her down...we'll do it again''
He's putting her back where he keeps her.

''i never thought it would this way
Just you and me we're here alone''
Obviously he always thought they'd be together in life.

    ''and if you stay...
    All I'm asking for is''
This is his deal with the devil and he's just saying he'd've killed more because he loves her and he'll just keep killing to prove his love even at the cost of his sanity.

    ''these hands stained red
For the ttime I have have killed you...''
In 'early sunsets' he had to kill her since she became a zombie/vampire so this is about him reliving that moment.

''and then, we can wash down this engagement ring,
    With poison and kerosene
And we'll laugh as we die
And we'll celebrate the end of thing
    With cheap champagne''
I think this means in order for her to come back and for them to be engaged again, he'll be using poison to kill people and fire. Then when it's all over they''ll celebrate her being back with 'cheap champagne.

'without a sound, I wish you away'
I don't know about this bit
Maybe its when he's leaving her at the well he's trying to get her out of his head.

I don't know about some of the interpretations on here and I'm not saying mines is completely correct but the first paragraph is true, gerard way has spoken of themes of the albums.

My interpretation was that the narrator was the groom of a newlywed couple. Unfortunately for the bride, the groom is an insane serial killer. The bride (That may or may not be insane, considering the mental state of the groom) gets killed while drowning with her husband, who enjoys it.

At least, that's how I imagined it.

Hmmm... I've been thinking that it's about a relationship that is really troubling him, and he wants to find a way to break up with her. But he realises that he still loves her incredibly, despite the fact that he can't stand having her around- "we'll say goodbye the hundredth time, and tomorrow we'll do it again"- he tries and tries to end the relationship, but can never bring himself to do it. "As rice grains and roses fall at your feet"- this could mean that every attempt to make things right fall by the wayside.

Eventually I think either a) they kill themselves or b) the relationship is ended after a particulary bad disagreement. And they're glad that it has ended- "We'll celebrate the end of things with cheap champagne"- the 'cheap champagne' factor could symbolise that the relationship was never really worth much effort, as they don't bother to splurge a little and celebrate the end of things with decent splendour.

Without a sound I took her down
and dressed in red and blue
( red and blue refers to blood and bruises)

    I squeezed
    imaginary wedding gown
that you can't wear in front of me(it was their wedding day and he wasnt allowed to see here in the dress before she walked down the isle)

a kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
as rice grains and roses fall at your feet
lets say goodbye, the hundredth time
and then tomorrow we'll do it again
tomorrow we'll do it again(he kills her and gets a new love and repeats it)

i dragged her down I put her out
and back there I left her where no one could see
and lifeless cold into this well(he dumps the dead body into the well)

i stared as this moment was held for me
a kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
as rice grains and roses fall at your feet
let's say goodbye, the hundredth time
and then tomorrow we'll do it again(its the same thing, he gets a new fiance and its their wedding day and he repeats what he did to the last one(s))

i never thought it'd be this way
just me and you, we're here alone
and if you stay, all I'm asking for is
    a thousand bodies piled up
i never thought would be enough
to show you just what I've been thinking(the reason the guy killed all his other finances in because he was waiting for the right one)

and I'll keep on making more
just to prove that I adore
    every inch of sanity
all I'm asking for is, all I'm asking for is
(he'll keep on killing more to prove he ISN'T crazy...:P)

    these hands stained red
    (with blood)

from the times that I've killed you and then
we can wash down this engagement ring
    with poison and kerosene
    we'll laugh as we die
and we'll celebrate the end of things
with cheap champagne(the will lock themselves into a burning building and celebrate their death)

I think it's about drugs, especially when you read; "I dragged her down and put her out"

You know what you do when you smoke something... you take a drag like a puff of smoke you know?

"I dragged her down" Here he is saying he smoked his stuff all the way.

"and put her out" well that is kinda' self explanatory and logical because, what do you do when your cig or joint or whatever the hell you're smoking is done for, you put it out.

I think it's about Sebastian, from the Little Mermaid.
"Without a sound I took her down (under the sea...)
And dressed in red and blue I squeezed (with his pincers)"

    and

"your twisted shell" (a twisted crab shell)

And plus Gerard said it when he was interviewed on AOL Sessions. Its all quite obvious.

Without a sound I took her down
and dressed in red and blue
( red and blue are pills, he took a bunch of his pills don't believe me then I refer to another song, head first for halos. "and now the red ones make me fly
and the blue ones help me fall")

    I squeezed
    imaginary wedding gown
that you can't wear in front of me(they were supposed to be married, but she had an affair, so thinks about killing her)

a kiss goodbye, your twisted shell
as rice grains and roses fall at your feet
lets say goodbye, the hundredth time
and then tomorrow we'll do it again
tomorrow we'll do it again(they will say they are breaking up, but then they will get back together just to do the same thing over and over)

i dragged her down I put her out
and back there I left her where no one could see
and lifeless cold into this well(there he goes thinking about killing her)

i stared as this moment was held for me
a kiss goodbye, your twisted shell

let's say goodbye, the hundredth time

    every inch of sanity

I think the narrarator is actually her fiance(because of the whole thing about her not being able to wear her wedding gown in front of him. The groom can't see the bride's dress before the wedding), and he catches her cheating on him, so he kills her and the guy she's cheating with.
