Nightwish: Sleeping Sun Meaning
Sleeping Sun Lyrics
Once upon a century
Wistful oceans calm and red
Ardent caresses laid to rest
For my dreams I hold my life
For wishes I behold my nights
The truth at the end of time
Losing faith makes a crime
I wish for this night...

It's about accepting death after losing her husband in battle knowing he would be needing her as all vikings do to be his valkyrie. It's was an honor to join immediately and common that wives and even the warhounds to willingly and without fear to get on the vikings funeral ship and set sail knowing that as soon as it was almost out of range of the bowman to fire their torch tipped arrows and set the longships on fire to send them to Valhalla. And a disgrace if you showed up without them. It would show that you had nobody that cared for you, so you must not have been an honorable man.. there are requirements for admittance if you don't have a valkyrie to take you back to the great hall after battle in Valhalla you could not be reborn to enjoy the feast that followed or be able to be in the following days battle.. you would be left to rot on that first battlefield because you had no honor. It's definitely the most beautiful song of acceptance of death .. she was probably singing it to him as she cleaned his wounds getting him ready for the pyre.
