Queen: We Are The Champions Meaning

Album cover for We Are The Champions album cover

Song Released: 1977

We Are The Champions Lyrics

I’ve paid my dues -
Time after time -
I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime -
And bad mistakes
I’ve made a few
I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face -
But I’ve come through

We are the champions - my friends
And we’ll keep...

This song gives me the chills; whatever Freddy Mercury was referring to; it gets into my heart! I am a recovering meth addict; and I apply it's interpretation to beating the odds of addiction; it's just freaking awesome. Thanks Freddy. Good interpretations though. Now I need to look up his other songs; Another One bites the Dust, etc. and see what everyone has to say. My son and I listen to Queen on the way to school almost everyday, and we are perplexed by the meaning of his writings; what a genius!

I agree that this song is about Queen themselves. But really, it's a pretty generic song, it could fit the general population.

It's a song of hope and overcoming all the bad things in life. How if you keep fighting, you can achieve anything.

Freddie mercury said "I was thinking about football when I wrote it. I wanted a participation song, something that the fans could latch on to. Of course, I've given it more theatrical subtlety than an ordinary football chant. I suppose it could also be construed as my version of "I Did It My Way." We have made it, and it certainly wasn't easy. No bed of roses as the song says. And it's still not easy."

This song is actually about queen themselves.. I can't believe you don't understand it.

I've taken my bows, and my curtains calls
you brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it, I thank you all
But it's been no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise

This is about Queen's struggle to the top

I'm fed up of people going onto Queen songs and writing down oh must be aids, I'm talking about the people who put "it was aids" for b-rap and death on 2 legs as well including this song they were all 70s Queen songs which was way before this whole Aids thing which was in the 80s may I add....so know your dates before say its aids...this is a good song for sports and could basically be freddie looking back on their career so far...they also on this ablum "news of the world" were trying to do more stadium anthams (such as we will rock you) and of course this fits perfectly live

This song is obviously not about aids as the song came out in 1977. Aids was first discovered 1981

I can't believe no one has submitted anything of worth to this song. Here goes.

it is sort of a sports based song. perhaps not. It might be in direct reference to the band themselves... anyway it pretty much states that they; the main character, sports team, which ever you choose; has worked hard to become the greatest there ever was 'I've had my shoves and kicks in my face'. and now that they have made it to the top they are flaunting it 'no time for losers'. and now 'my curtain calls'. Thus the time is come; another will take the place as the greatest ever, and 'its been no bed of roses' it's easy.

hmm not altogher thorough. but it gets the job done.
any additions feel free to add write it up. Some one should. God it's only Queen, greatest band ever, one of their best songs ever.

FFS Of course this song isn't about AIDS. He got HIV positive like 86 or between 85-87. And this song was written a looooooong long time before..

I don't know what it's about, people say it's about his gay/bisexualness but I can't see the "gay" thing.

"I've paid my dues time after time... I've done my sentance, but committed no crime... I've had my share of sand kicked in my face, but I've come through..." This song is about Freddie Murcury dying of AIDS. "We'll keep on fighting TILL THE END".

'We are the champions' is referring to his determination to beat AIDS. No time for losers... He won't give up, and has no time for those who do... "I've taken my bows, my curtain calls, you've given me fame and fortune... I thank you all. But it's been no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise" It's been tough, but he's still going strong. "I consider it a challenge before the whole human race, And I'd never lose." He is again expressing his determination to live on. On a less optimistic note, I believe that the abrupt ending, "We are the champions--" , means that he knows that AIDS will win eventually, because he does not bother to finish the chorus, signifying finality.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
